WHEN DOES JUSTICE BECOMES ANOTHER CRIME?

Growing up, I heard about a man who was set ablaze by an angry mob because he was allegedly accused of stealing something.

Later, it was discovered that he was innocent.

Just recently, I heard about a man, Ibee, who was allegedly killed by a mob after being accused of stealing a phone.

Whether the accusation was true or not, he was never supposed to be judged and sentenced by a mob.

Then, two days ago, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across a story about a dispatch rider who was disgraced and accused of stealing goods, only for it to later be discovered that the goods had simply been misplaced.

And these are just a few stories.

There are countless others people beaten, humiliated, injured, or killed because they were accused of crimes they may never have committed.

Don't get me wrong. I understand the anger that comes with being robbed or wronged. I understand the frustration when you feel like the justice system is too slow.

But when did an accusation become enough to sentence someone to death?

When did being suspected become the same thing as being guilty?

And how many innocent people have to die before we realize that mob justice can create another victim while trying to punish the first?

Justice is supposed to seek the truth. Jungle justice often seeks revenge before the truth is even known.

Because what happens when the person you're beating is innocent?

What happens when the person you're setting ablaze has a family waiting for them at home?

What happens when you finally discover that the “thief” you killed never stole anything?

You can't bring them back.

So, for how long will innocent people continue to die in the name of jungle justice?

And when does the desire for justice become the desire to commit another crime? Or am I overthinking?
