I AM WHO I SAY I AM.

Heaven smiled at my mom again after giving her her first bundle of joy. On the 27th of June, 2005, my cry filled the air, creating smiles on the faces of everyone around me.

I grew up to be a smart and loved young girl. I was treated like a princess, no doubt because of my small stature. I enjoyed every attention that came my way. And when it was time for me to go to school, I went to a boarding house. Everyone loved me because of how adorable I was.

I became my school's ambassador, and every visitor the school had always wanted to take pictures with me. I was enjoying the celebrity privilege that I never thought I could ever have.

The seniors treated me so nicely. I wasn't allowed to do heavy chores because I was considered too small to handle such tasks. It even went as far as having my bathing water ready for the next day of school. That was how pampered I was.

But beyond all these were those who thought I didn't deserve all the treatment I received.

After the senior sets who pampered me graduated, I started feeling the heat of the school. Reality soon hit me that I wasn't the celebrity I used to be. I got bullied a lot at some point, and as time went on, I was able to learn how to defend myself.

As I grew up, I grew with certain insecurities. I was not just short, but I looked like a child. Anyone could mistake me for a child if they didn't know me. I wore footwear sizes that could fit a child, and clothes? I was really selective with the kind of clothes I wore. I made sure I wasn't dressed like a child, but no matter what I did, I was still regarded as a child.

Perhaps that is where the real struggle began, whenever I am called beautiful, I do wave the compliment off. Whenever I am called cute, I feel like I am being called a puppy.Β

The struggles and lack of self acceptance began, not because I was small, not with looking younger than my age, but because I was made to believe that my appearance is something I needed to compensate for. While walking on the road, I feel people's eyes on me, the laughter that came from a distance felt like it was directed to me, even when it doesn't matter.Β

For a long time, I allowed people's perception about my height create a narrative that should never have found a foundation in my head.Β

... But I am learning something now; I am not who people say I am, I am who I say I am.Β

My height does not determine my intelligence, neither will it change the cost of living of people living in the country.Β

My height doesn't limit me from achieving great things that I would want for myself.Β

My Height doesn't stop me from reaching my goals.Β

Looking younger than my age doesn't make me less of a woman.Β

I would be loved naturally and not chosen as an option because I refuse to be chosen as an option.Β

And when I am called beautiful I would accept it with confidence and an expensive self worth and when my brain tries to remind me of what people has been saying I would say "shh!!! We've said thank you already, that is how it should be".Β

My height doesn't stop my presence from going before me and filling any room with my magnificent aura.Β

I can also dress in ways that makes me feel beautiful, not in a way to please anyone, but because I want to be me.Β

I would look at myself and see beyond the inches I do not have.Β

... Because there's so much to me than my height.Β

My mind still remains, my character still remain.Β

... And because of this discipline I have built in me, I would look back to the days that I was pictured to be not who they said I was and tell them I get to decide who I want to become and so I am who I say I am.Β

Yours.Β

Amaya's penπβοΈ
