Learning To Speak Again

I never thought there would be a time in my life when I would struggle to speak—not because I was deaf, but because I was never really given the chance to explore my voice and my talents as a child.

Growing up, I struggled in ways that were not always visible. I had food, shelter, and a place to sleep, but there were other things I lacked. I lacked the freedom to fully express myself. My potentials were caged, and I was made to believe that people who spoke too loudly would eventually be silenced.

So, I became scared.

I was scared to speak. Scared to dream too much. Scared to let people see what I could do. Slowly, I began to drop the ambitions I once had and accepted what life seemed to have planned for me instead of what I had always wanted for myself.

My dreams became something I kept to myself.

At some point, I started believing that maybe I wasn't meant to be seen by many people. Maybe my voice wasn't important enough. Maybe I was better off staying quiet and watching other people become the things I once wanted to become.

And that hurts.

It hurts to realize that sometimes, it isn't the absence of talent that stops us; it is the fear that grows around it.

But now, as I grow older, I am beginning to understand myself better. I am learning that the little girl who had dreams before she became afraid is still somewhere inside me. Her dreams may have been delayed, but they are not dead.

I am still figuring things out. I am still learning how to use my voice, how to take up space, how to trust my abilities, and how to believe that I deserve to be heard.

Maybe I lost my voice for a while.

But I don't think I was meant to remain silent forever.

So, I am slowly finding my way back to myself—one word, one dream, and one brave step at a time.

And if there is anything I have learnt so far, it is this:

Never allow someone else's fear of your voice to become the reason you stop speaking.
