MAYBE YOU COULD BE THE ONE TO TREAT YOU BETTER

I didn't even realize I had written this line down in my little book of quotes until I was going through it last night.

“Maybe you could be the one to treat you better.”

It's actually a lyric from one of Tatiana Manaois' songs, but seeing it again after so long made me pause.

Sometimes, we spend so much time waiting for other people to treat us better that we forget we can also choose to treat ourselves better. We wait for someone to understand us, be gentle with us, choose us, and give us the love and kindness we keep giving everyone else.

But maybe we need to start with ourselves.

Maybe I need to stop being so hard on myself. Maybe I need to give myself the same patience I so easily give other people. Maybe I need to stop feeling guilty for resting, changing, outgrowing things, or choosing what gives me peace. Maybe I need to speak to myself with a little more kindness.

I think we often forget that we are also people we have to live with. We can't keep waiting for someone else to come along and make us feel worthy, loved, seen or enough. Sometimes, we have to remind ourselves first.

So that little lyric I wrote down years ago suddenly feels different now.

Maybe I could be the one to treat me better.

Maybe I could be gentler with myself, give myself room to grow, forgive myself for the things I didn't know then, stop punishing myself for not having everything figured out, and simply give myself permission to be human.

I don't know.

But I'm learning.

And perhaps that's what growing looks like sometimes...not becoming a completely different person overnight, but slowly learning to treat the person you already are with a little more love.

Maybe I really could be the one to treat me better.

And honestly, I think I deserve that too. 🤍

~Betty Liss
