My Friendly Enemy Chp XI

Chapter Eleven: A Wife's Intuition

The afternoon was filled with laughter.

After years of separation, it felt as though Andrew and I had simply picked up from where we had stopped as we and our wives got along remarkably well, and before long, the living room echoed with conversations, jokes, and shared experiences.

My wife, Bukunmi, was the perfect hostess.

She made sure everyone was comfortable, personally serving our guests despite the presence of house staff. Her warm smile and gentle nature made Andrew's wife, Chinelo, feel at home almost immediately.

"I can see why Clement speaks so highly of you," Chinelo said with a smile.

Bukunmi laughed softly.

"I hope he only says good things."

Andrew chuckled from across the room.

"Oh, he does. In fact, I don't think I've met anyone who praises his wife as much as Clement does."

I smiled.

"That's because she's God's greatest gift to me."

Bukunmi blushed while everyone laughed.

A few moments later, two little girls came running down the staircase.

"Daddy!"

They jumped into my arms one after the other.

Andrew smiled warmly.

"So these must be the famous twins."

I nodded proudly.

"Yes."

I kissed the first one gently on the forehead.

"This is Tolulope Praise."

She smiled politely.

"Good afternoon, Uncle."

Andrew smiled.

"Good afternoon, my princess."

I then placed my hand on the shoulder of the second twin.

"And this little troublemaker is Toluwani Blessing."

She pouted immediately.

"I'm not a troublemaker, Daddy."

The room erupted into laughter.

Andrew bent down to their level.

"You both are beautiful."

"Thank you, Uncle," they replied in unison.

His son, Ethan, soon joined them, and within minutes the three children were running around the garden, laughing as though they had known each other for years.

Watching them reminded me of my childhood.

It reminded me of Andrew and me.

For a brief moment, I forgot that twenty four years had ever separated us.

Several hours later, the visit came to an end.

We escorted Andrew and his family to their vehicle.

He embraced me tightly.

"Thank you for today, CEO."

I smiled.

"You don't have to thank me."

"It felt like coming home."

"It is home."

He looked into my eyes.

"I won't let years pass before seeing you again."

I laughed.

"You'd better not."

After exchanging farewells, the black SUV slowly drove out of the compound.

I stood at the gate until it disappeared from sight.

A smile lingered on my face.

"My brother is back," I whispered to myself.

I couldn't have been happier.

That evening, after the twins had gone to bed, Bukunmi and I sat together on the balcony overlooking the beautifully lit garden.

The cool Abuja breeze swept gently across the compound.

She was unusually quiet.

I noticed.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked.

She hesitated.

"Can I tell you something without you getting upset?"

I smiled.

"Since when have you been afraid to tell me anything?"

She looked at me seriously.

"I don't know how to explain it..."

I waited patiently.

"I don't think Andrew is genuine."

The smile on my face faded.

"What do you mean?"

She folded her hands on her lap.

"He's polite."

"Yes."

"Intelligent."

"Yes."

"Successful."

"Yes."

"But..."

She paused.

"I feel like he's hiding something."

I couldn't help but laugh softly.

"Bukunmi..."

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

She looked at me intently.

"I watched him throughout today."

"And?"

"There were moments when he smiled... but his eyes didn't, he's not whom he portray himself to be."

I shook my head.

"You're overthinking, You think my childhood friend is a charlatan ?"

"No, Clement."

I reached for her hand.

"My love, Andrew and I have been best friends since we were very small even before I achieved all these wealth."

"I know."

"We've shared everything."

"I know."

"He would never hurt me."

Bukunmi remained silent.

I smiled reassuringly.

"Do you know something funny?"

"What?"

"My adopted mother used to say exactly the same thing."

Her eyebrows rose.

"Really?"

"Every single time she saw Andrew, she'd warn me to be careful around him."

"And?"

"I always told her she was just being paranoid."

Bukunmi didn't smile.

Instead, she asked quietly,

"And what if she wasn't?"

I chuckled.

"That's women's intuition for you."

She looked away.

"I hope you're right."

"I am."

I squeezed her hand gently.

"You don't have to worry."

Andrew is family, you have nothing to be afraid of."

Bukunmi forced a faint smile, but deep inside, the uneasy feeling remained.

Long after Clement had gone to bed, she stood alone by the bedroom window, staring into the darkness outside.

She couldn't explain why...

But something about Andrew unsettled her.

It wasn't anything he had said.

Nor was it anything he had done.

It was simply a feeling.

A quiet warning in her heart.

The same warning another woman had received many years ago... A warning Clement had ignored then.

And one he had just ignored again.
