MY LITTLE SISTER

"It is beautiful, Fola," I tell my little sister as she shows me a drawing of the two of us, a big smile on her face.

Adam barely looks at it before walking away.

Mum stares at her with a look of disgust and pity as she watches our interaction. She has worn that expression ever since that incident eight months ago when she pushed Fola down the stairs.

She probably did not mean to.

But since then, Mum has tried all sorts of things to "fix" Fola. She called a priest to cast out the demon inside her and doused her in holy water until she nearly drowned.

"No child of mine will be possessed by the devil!" she screamed as she performed these acts.

But Fola isn't broken. Nor does she need to be fixed.

She just needs to be loved.

Mum wasn't the only one who felt that way. Adam did too. But I can't blame him—since the incident, his schoolmates just couldn't stop bullying him, and because of that, he has no friends.

I try to comfort Adam, but he doesn't listen to me. No one does. Not even Mum, even when I beg her to stop putting her hands on Fola.

Fola does not deserve this treatment. She is only six.

Mum doesn't let her go outside anymore.

"What would the neighbors say?" she asks anxiously, biting down on her thumbnail whenever the topic is brought up.

I do not care what the neighbors think. I love Fola. I tell her jokes until we're laughing out loud, and sing her songs until she falls asleep.

After pacing around the room for a while, Mum finally speaks to her.

"Who are you always talking to, Fola?" she asks.

"Tobi," Fola replies.

That is a weird question to ask. Who else would she be talking to if not me?

It doesn't matter. I'm just glad they're finally talking.

Mum hugs Fola and bawls her eyes out. "Oh, my baby, forgive me. It was all my fault. I'm so sorry."

She gets down on her knees and bows her head.

"Tobi! Please, I beg you, leave my daughter alone!"

I don't understand. What is she begging me for?

"Please let my daughter have a normal life. I beg you!"

What is she talking about? How is this my fault? It was her fault for pushing Fola down the stairs! What is she—

Oh.

Wait.

I remember now.

Mum did not mean to push Fola down the stairs.

She was just trying to stop her from seeing my dead body.
