It Was Just Heartburn...

It was almost closing time when Tayo walked into the pharmacy.

He looked completely fine.

Almost too healthy.

No panic.

No rushing.

But he has been dealing with a persistent heartburn for the past two days.

"Good evening."

"Good evening, sir. How can I help you?"

"I would like to get an antacid, please."

"I've had a heartburn that has refused to stop for the past two days."

The pharmacist nodded.

"Where exactly do you feel the discomfort?"

Tayo placed his hand over the centre of his chest.

"Here."

"Does it move anywhere else?"

He thought for a moment.

"Sometimes, I feel it in my left arm."

The pharmacist paused.

"Your left arm?"

"Yes."

"And you believe it is heartburn?"

"Yes,I think so. I have experienced something similar before."

She looked at him more closely.

There was a faint sheen of sweat on his forehead.

"Does it become worse when you walk or climb stairs?"

"Now that you mention it, yes. It seems to."

"Do you feel short of breath?"

"A little."

"Any nausea?"

"Occasionally."

The pharmacist did not reach for the antacid.

Instead, she looked at him carefully.

"Sir, I think you need to go to the hospital."

Tayo frowned.

"Because of heartburn?"

"I am concerned about the symptoms you have described."

She explained why. The chest pain that sits in the centre, not to one side. The arm. The sweat on his forehead that had nothing to do with the evening heat. The way it got worse, not better, the more he moved.

Tayo listened quietly.

"But I have had heartburn before. It usually goes away with the antacid."

"I understand. But we should not assume that this is just heartburn."

He hesitated.

"Could I not take something for it first and see if it improves?"

"I would strongly advise against waiting. Please go to the hospital and get evaluated as soon as possible."

For the first time, Tayo looked genuinely concerned.

He thanked her and left for the hospital.

Later that evening, the pharmacist received an update.

It was not heartburn.

Tayo was having a myocardial infarction.

A heart attack.

Thankfully, he had reached the hospital in time to receive treatment.

The antacid he had walked into the pharmacy asking for would never have treated the problem.

Big Health Lesson:

Heartburn and a heart attack can sometimes feel surprisingly similar.

Chest discomfort should not automatically be dismissed as indigestion, especially when it is accompanied by pressure or heaviness in the chest, discomfort spreading to the arm, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or symptoms that become worse with physical activity.

A person experiencing a heart attack may not always look critically ill. Tayo walked into the pharmacy calmly, convinced that he simply needed an antacid.

The most valuable thing the pharmacist did that evening wasn't dispensing anything. It was refusing to.

And sometimes, the difference between "just heartburn" and something much more serious begins with a few extra questions.

Until next time, stay healthy. 🌿
