The Chrysalis Grind: Why the Hard Stuff Makes You Fly

If you’ve been hanging out in my corner of the internet for a while, you know I spend a lot of time talking about the daily hustle, the endless UI lectures, the bead threading, the algorithm battles, and the random emotional plot twists of life.

But lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about butterflies.

We all love the end result, don’t we? We see a butterfly fluttering past on a warm morning, completely weightless, vibrant, and free, and we think: “Must be nice.”

We forget that the beauty was bought at a very heavy price.

The Stages Nobody Posts on Instagram

Nobody starts out with wings.

Before a butterfly gets to be the aesthetic icon of the insect kingdom, it has to crawl in the dirt as a caterpillar, eating whatever is in front of it just to survive. Then comes the part nobody really likes to talk about: the chrysalis.

Inside that cocoon, it’s not just a cute little nap. The caterpillar literally breaks down completely. It melts. It loses its old shape entirely before it can build something new. It’s dark, cramped, isolated, and probably terrifying if caterpillars have thoughts.

If that isn't a direct metaphor for real life, I don't know what is.

Trusting the Goo

Sometimes, life places you in a season that feels dark and uncomfortably tight.

• Maybe your project isn't making sense.

• Maybe your creative bank is dry.

• Maybe you're working so hard behind the scenes and it feels like nobody sees the effort, only the struggle.

It’s easy to feel like you’re breaking down during those times. But what if you’re not falling apart? What if you’re just in the chrysalis?

You can't skip the struggle to get to the wings. If you cut a butterfly out of its cocoon early to "save" it from the hard work of breaking free, its wings won't inflate. It needs the pressure of the fight to push fluid into its wings so it can actually fly. The hardship isn't a punishment it's the exact mechanism that prepares you for takeoff.

Becoming Beautiful at the End of the Day

Life can be tough. It can be sad, exhausting, and downright confusing. But there is so much peace in knowing that no stage lasts forever. The crawl leads to the cocoon, and the cocoon leads to the sky.

Whatever dark or messy stage you’re navigating right now whether you’re grinding through exams, figuring out your career, or just trying to stay sane in this wild world give yourself some grace. You’re just mid-metamorphosis.

The wings are coming. And at the end of the day, the breakout is going to be beautiful.

Over to You:

What stage of the butterfly process do you feel like you're in right now? Are you in the heavy grinding phase, the dark cocoon, or are you finally starting to stretch your wings? Let’s talk about it down below.

Gomu Gomu no—Metamorphosis! (Still in the cocoon, but working on the wings...) A Rumpus Ramble episode from your favourite,

~RR
