The Girl With One Exercise Book

_A story on Education_

On e upon a time,there was a girl called Zainab .

She lived in Ajegunle, Lagos. 3 rooms, 9 people.

Her school had no chairs. 60 students, 1 teacher, and a roof that leaked when it rained.

But Zainab had one thing: *One exercise book.*

She couldn’t afford new ones, so she used both sides. Math on front, English on back. She borrowed textbooks and copied everything at night with candlelight.

People laughed. "Why are you stressing? Just learn trade."

Her dad said, "School is good, but money is not there."

Zainab said, "Education is the only generator that never runs out of fuel."

*The Turning Point*

SS2, her school got a visitor. A small NGO called *"Read to Rise"*.

They didn’t come with speeches. They came with 2 things:

1. *Solar lamps* - so students could read at night

2. *A mentor* - Tolu, a 24-year-old who graduated from UNILAG and came back to teach for free on Saturdays

Tolu told them: "Education is not about passing WAEC.

Education is about _options_. The more you know, the more doors you can open."

For 1 year, Zainab showed up every Saturday.

She learned coding on a borrowed laptop.

She learned how to write CVs.

She learned that asking questions was not "being rude" — it was "being curious."

*4 Years Later*

Zainab got admission to study Computer Science on scholarship.

She worked part-time, taught kids coding on weekends, and built an app called *"MyBook"* — where students in low-resource schools can share and borrow e-notes.

Today, 3,000 students use MyBook in Lagos.

The same NGO that gave her a solar lamp now uses her app.

Zainab went back to her old school last month.

No more floor sitting. They now have 20 desks, solar power, and a small computer lab.

She stood in front of 60 students holding just one exercise book each and said:

*_"This book is small. But what you put inside it can be bigger than this street.

Education will not do the work for you.

But it will give you light to see the work, and tools to do it."__
