THE LADY BY THE WINDOW

The Lady by the Window

Every evening, she claimed the same seat by the window.

A cup of tea rested between her palms, growing colder as the minutes slipped by. The little café

overlooked a busy street where strangers crossed paths, lovers shared umbrellas, and life

hurried on without asking permission.

She came for the window.

Or at least, that's what she told herself.

Until the day he walked in.

He wasn't extraordinary in the way stories often describe handsome men. He simply carried

kindness like it belonged to him. He ordered black coffee, thanked the waiter with a smile, and

settled at the table directly opposite hers.

Neither of them spoke.

Yet somehow, they noticed each other.

The next evening, he returned.

So did she.

Soon, it became routine. She arrived at five. He arrived five minutes later. She read a novel she

barely remembered. He pretended to work on his laptop, though his eyes wandered toward the

window more often than the screen.

Days turned into weeks.

Their conversations existed only through stolen glances.

One smile.

A shy nod.

The silent question of Are you here again?

And the even quieter answer...

Yes. For some reason, I am.

One rainy Thursday, she forgot her umbrella.

She stood by the café entrance, watching the rain pour like the sky had decided never to stop.

"I think," a voice beside her said softly, "we've spent enough evenings pretending we're

strangers."

She turned.

It was him.

Holding an umbrella just large enough for two.

Her heart betrayed her with a smile before her lips did.

"So... you noticed me?" she asked.

He laughed.

"I noticed you on the first day."

"Then why didn't you say anything?"

"I was afraid."

She blinked.

"You?"

“You looked like someone who carried entire galaxies in her thoughts. I wasn't sure I deserved

to interrupt them."

She laughed then—a real laugh, the kind that escaped before permission could be given.

Together, they stepped into the rain.

The umbrella forced them closer than either expected.

Close enough to hear each other's breathing.

Close enough for silence to become comfortable.

"I have to confess something," he said.

"What?"

"I started coming here because of you."

She stopped walking.

"I thought I was the only one doing that."

For a second, the city disappeared.

There were no passing cars.

No rain.

No strangers.

Only two people smiling at the absurdity of discovering they'd been waiting for each other all

along.

Months later, the café owner would joke that they were his favorite love story.

Not because they were dramatic.

Not because they kissed in the rain.

But because every evening, without fail, they still chose the same table by the window.

Sometimes they talked for hours.

Sometimes they watched the sunset without saying a word.

He would reach for her hand beneath the table, and she would squeeze it gently, as if reminding

him she was still there.

The window no longer represented waiting.

It became the place where two lonely hearts accidentally found the courage to be seen.

And whenever people asked them how they met, she would smile at him before answering,

"I wasn't looking for love.

I was just a lady by the window.

Turns out...

he was looking through it too.”
