The Lady by the Window🪟

Every evening at exactly 6:00 p.m., she would pull the same wooden chair to the window.

It didn't matter whether it was sunny, rainy, or windy.

She was always there.

The neighbors noticed her years ago, but eventually, seeing her by the window became part of their daily routine.

Children walking home from school waved at her.

Shop owners greeted her from across the street.

Old women smiled whenever they passed.

She always smiled back.

But her eyes...

Her eyes never stayed on the people.

They searched the road, as if expecting someone to appear at any moment.

Some people believed she simply loved watching sunsets.

Others said she must be lonely.

A few whispered that she had lost her mind.

Nobody ever asked her why she sat there every evening.

Nobody knew the story hidden behind those quiet eyes.

Years earlier, that same window had been the happiest place in her life.

She and the love of her life would sit there every evening after work.

Sometimes they drank tea.

Sometimes they talked about their dreams.

Sometimes they said nothing at all, simply enjoying each other's company as the sun disappeared into the evening sky.

One evening, before leaving on a journey for work, he held both of her hands and smiled.

"I'll be back before you know it."

She laughed.

"You say that every time."

"Because it's true," he replied. "No matter how far life takes me, I'll always find my way back to you."

Those were the last words she heard from him.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

Then months.

No phone call.

No letter.

No explanation.

Only silence.

She searched everywhere she could.

She visited police stations.

Hospitals.

Bus terminals.

She asked strangers if they had seen him.

Every answer broke her heart a little more.

Eventually, everyone stopped searching.

Her family gently told her to move on.

Her friends encouraged her to start over.

Some even introduced her to other men.

But she refused.

"What if he comes back?" she would quietly ask.

Years turned into decades.

The flowers he planted outside their home withered away.

The paint on the walls faded.

The world around her changed.

Children who once played in the street grew up and moved away.

New families moved into the neighborhood.

People came and went.

But every evening at exactly 6:00 p.m., she opened the curtains, pulled her chair close to the window, and watched the road.

Hope had become her daily routine.

One afternoon, a little girl who lived next door knocked on her door.

"Grandma," she asked innocently, "why do you always sit by the window?"

The old woman smiled gently.

"Because I'm waiting for someone."

"Who?"

She looked outside before answering.

"Someone who promised he'd come home."

The little girl frowned.

"Has he forgotten your house?"

The woman chuckled softly.

"Maybe."

"Do you think he'll still come?"

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered,

"I don't know anymore... but if he ever does, I don't want him to think nobody waited."

The little girl hugged her before running home.

The old woman watched the sunset that evening just as she had done thousands of times before.

Another day passed.

Another evening.

Another empty road.

Then, one rainy evening, there was a knock at her door.

Her heart began to race.

Her hands trembled.

She slowly stood up from her chair.

Could it really be him?

After all these years?

She opened the door...

Only to find a delivery man standing with a small package.

"Are you Mrs. Williams?" he asked.

She nodded.

"This was found among the belongings of a man whose personal items were recently identified. Your address was written inside."

With shaking hands, she opened the package.

Inside was an old wristwatch she had given him on his birthday.

Beneath it was a folded piece of paper.

She unfolded it carefully.

It read:

"If this ever reaches you, I'm sorry.

Life took me somewhere I couldn't return from.

Please don't spend your life waiting for me.

Live.

Smile.

Love again.

You deserve the happiness I couldn't give you."

Tears rolled down her face.

Not because he never came back.

But because she realized she had spent years waiting for someone who had already let her go.

The next evening, the neighbors looked toward her window as they always did.

She was there.

The chair was still beside the window.

But this time...

She wasn't watching the road.

She wasn't searching for a familiar face.

For the first time in years, she was simply watching the sunset.

And somehow...

It looked more beautiful than ever.

Sometimes, the hardest goodbye isn't losing someone.

It's letting go of the hope that they'll return.

And sometimes, healing begins the moment you stop waiting at the window and start living again.
