The Last Message - Part 1

At 11:47 p.m., Maya saw the message.

“I think we should stop doing this.”

Five words.

She stared at the screen, waiting for another message to explain what he meant.

Nothing came.

She called Daniel. No answer.

Again. Straight to voicemail.

Daniel had never been the kind of man who disappeared.

For two years, he had been the person she called when something happened. He remembered the smallest things about her, knew when her “I'm fine” wasn't really fine, and somehow became part of the quiet routine of her life. Do this didn't make sense.

The next morning, there was still no message.

Maya typed several replies and deleted every one of them before finally sending:

“Okay.”

The smallest word. The biggest lie.

Her friends told her to forget him.

“He would explain if he wanted to.” “Don't chase him.” “Two years and he couldn't even say it to your face?”

Maya listened, but something felt wrong.

Daniel wasn't perfect, but he wasn't cruel either.

She couldn't understand how someone who had once promised to tell her the truth if his feelings ever changed could end two years with five words. Still, she didn't call.

Three months passed.

She deleted their pictures, archived their conversations and convinced herself she was moving on.

Then Daniel's mother called.

“Maya… Daniel has been in the hospital.”

Her heart dropped.
