The Last Message - Part 6

Metal crashing.

The screen went black.

Maya’s hand flew to her mouth.

“That was the accident?”

He nodded.

“But that’s not what you need to see.”

He skipped forward.

The next clip showed a hospital corridor.

Daniel sat outside Maya’s room, shaking, his face pale with fear.

A doctor approached him.

They spoke briefly—no audio, just tense gestures.

The doctor handed him a file.

Daniel opened it.

And his expression broke completely.

The video ended.

Maya stared at him.

“What was in that file?”

Daniel’s brother looked away.

“Your medical report.”

Maya’s breath caught.

“What?”

“He found something out about you that night.”

Her heart began to race.

“What did he find out?”

Before he could answer, headlights cut through the darkness outside the warehouse.

A car had arrived.

Daniel’s brother stiffened.

“You need to go. Now.”

“Who is it?”

“I don’t know.”

The doors opened.

Daniel stepped out first.

Then he moved to the passenger side and pulled out a wheelchair.

Maya’s breath hitched.

In it sat Amara.

Maya stared, frozen.

Amara looked terrified.

Daniel wheeled her forward slowly.

“I need to tell you something,” he said.

Maya looked between them.

“What is this?”

Amara’s eyes filled with tears.

“The accident wasn’t caused by Daniel’s brother.”

Maya went still.

“What?”

Amara’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Daniel was driving.”

Silence swallowed the warehouse.

Maya felt the ground shift beneath her.

She turned slowly toward Daniel.

He didn’t deny it.

He just looked at her, eyes full of grief.

And everything—every half-truth, every silence, every strange decision—suddenly began to fall into place.

Maya whispered:

“Why did you let everyone believe your brother was driving?”

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, Amara said softly:

“Because if the truth comes out…”

She looked at Maya.

“…you’ll understand why Daniel was really at the hospital that night.”

Maya couldn't move.

She stared at Daniel.

“You were driving?”

Daniel looked down. “Yes.”

Maya stepped back. “Then why did you let me believe your brother was driving?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Amara rolled her wheelchair closer.

“Because Daniel wasn’t who he wanted you to think he was that night.”

Maya turned to her. “What does that mean?”

Amara took a shaky breath. “He was coming to see you.”

Maya’s heart stopped. “Me?”

Daniel nodded. “You called earlier. You said you weren’t feeling well.”

Maya frowned. “I don’t remember.”

“You were dizzy all day,” he said quietly. “I was taking you to the hospital.”

Maya’s eyes filled. “Then what happened?”

Amara spoke again. “We argued. He wanted to turn back because of the rain. I told him to keep going.”

She looked down. “Then another car came through the intersection.”

Daniel closed his eyes. “I swerved.”

The accident. The hospital. Everything clicked into place.

But Maya still shook her head. “Then why say your brother was driving?”

Daniel’s voice broke. “Because I had been drinking.”

Maya froze.

“Not drunk,” he added quickly. “But enough that I shouldn’t have been driving.”

“So you lied.”

“Yes.”

“And your brother took the blame?”

“He wasn’t supposed to.”

Maya stared at him. “Then why did he disappear?”

Daniel looked at his brother.

“Because he found out.”

His brother finally spoke. “I told him I’d confess.”

Daniel nodded. “But then they said you might not wake up.”

Maya covered her mouth.

“I couldn’t think,” Daniel whispered.

“So you ran?”

“No.”

His brother cut in. “He stayed.”

Maya looked up.

“Six days outside your room,” he said. “He wouldn’t leave.”

“Then why didn’t you come in?”

Daniel’s eyes filled. “Your mother was there.”

Maya’s breath caught.

“She said if I loved you, I’d stay away and let you heal.”

Maya let out a broken laugh. “And you listened?”

“I thought I was doing the right thing.”

She shook her head through tears. “You always do.”

Daniel said nothing.

Maya turned to Amara. “And you?”

Amara looked away. “I found out about the cancer after the accident.”

Maya went still. “So that’s when everything started.”

“Yes.”

Silence settled.

Then Maya’s phone buzzed.

Unknown Number: There’s one more thing Daniel hasn’t told you.

She looked at him. “What now?”

Daniel went pale.

The next message appeared:

“Ask him why your medical report was in his hands that night.”

Maya stepped closer. “What report?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

His eyes met hers—trapped.

“I found something out that night,” he said.

“What?”

His voice broke.

“You were pregnant.”

Maya went completely still.
