Gone are the days when a boy named Olaitan carried the pride of the Adio family. He was the third born of five children. Smart from birth. Good at any subject. His family loved him so much they never hesitated to award him at every position he won in class. He always topped. No one could compete. Then came SS3. West Africa Examination Council, 2013. Olaitan topped again. The best among those who sat that year. But he had a dream. To become a medical practitioner. And you all know how it is with JAMB. He wrote JAMB for almost three good years. But he couldn’t score above 200 plus. The painful part? His friends from secondary school had all gotten admission with their preferred courses. And here was Olaitan, still figuring life out. Still struggling with low JAMB scores. The last time, he made up his mind. "Whatever I score, I will accept any school. Any course. And truly, that year Olaitan scored 198 in JAMB. He processed admission to a polytechnic. He was offered Agriculture Science. He did the screening. Submitted every document to the registrar’s office. Then campus life started, gradually. Truly, Olaitan didn’t mingle with mediocrity. He moved with the most brilliant and smartest students in his department. But remember this: Olaitan didn’t want Agriculture Science. He wanted to be a medical practitioner. So he carried that pain to school. It made him lose focus. No sign of seriousness in Olaitan. He was caged by the mind of "I should be in Medicine". And because he hadn’t achieved it, he was torn. He never spoke up. Not even to his friends. And it’s not that Olaitan wasn’t smart. But the weight of not getting the blueprint of his dream drew him down, drastically. First semester examination came. While others were reading, Olaitan hardly touched his handouts. He didn’t pay attention in class. Exam started. In a blink, it was over. Everyone went home for holidays. Few weeks later, second semester began. Everyone was anticipating first semester results. After two months in school, the tensed moment arrived. The moment every student fears the most. Result was out. Everyone was panicking to check. Olaitan too. His friends came around. Olaitan, have you checked yours?No, he said. They told him theirs. All distinctions. Real scholars. The real deal. When everyone went to their hostels, Olaitan logged in to the school portal. And the tension was real. That night, Olaitan cried throughout. Lower Credit. CGPA: 2.88. That night was the night of change. He made up his mind: "I will do better in second semester. Olaitan marked out his schedule. Drafted a timetable for each course. Paid attention in lecture rooms. Started asking questions. Something he never did before. His course mates noticed. Guy, what's up? You’ve really changed. He replied, So? Yes. I’ve changed. For the better. Second semester exams came. Before they knew it, everything was wrapped up. They all went home for mid break. When they returned, after just about three weeks, result came out. This time, there was no tension. Olaitan checked his result right in front of his friends. And come and see the applause. The praise. In the whole department. Since then, Olaitan’s life changed from worst to better. So I don’t know who has encountered the same life as Olaitan.
