WHISPERS OF FREEDOM: WE MOVE.

That night, my father brought the lamb inside.

Hope stood in the house with us and followed our every movement.

My Mother moved around the house with a strange urgency, gathering things we had never needed to gather before. Bread was being prepared without yeast. Sandals were placed beside the door. My father's staff leaned against the wall.

Then he took a small branch of hyssop and dipped it into a bowl.

I watched him walk to the door.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

He looked at me for a moment, then turned back to the doorway. A smile rested on his face as he stepped outside to brush the blood across the lintel, then across one doorpost and the other.

The red stood against the wood.

I stared at it.

Questions surged through my heart, “What is going on?”.

But I managed to form a little

"Why?"...

My mother knelt beside me and took my face gently between her hands.

"Tonight, you stay inside."

That was all she said.

Outside, Goshen was unusually quiet.

We ate quickly, the herbs were bitter , the bread unleavened, the lamb too was ate in a hurry . My father ate with his sandals on and his staff in his hand, as though we could be called to leave at any moment.

Then we waited.

I remember the waiting more than anything else, my mother kept looking toward the door.

And then, somewhere in the distance, a cry rose into the night.

In Egypt, People were shouting. Doors were opening. Feet hurried across the streets.

, in Egypt , mourning spread from house to house, until it seemed the whole land had begun to grieve at once.

But our door remained closed and the blood was still there.

Then, Goshen became alive, Someone outside was calling.

"Go! Go now!", our faces became lit with joy and happiness.

We grabbed whatever we could carry, we ran into Egypt and demanded for their things too.

It was our turn.

Behind us was the only home we had ever known, Ahead of us was a road none of us had ever walked.

Thousands upon thousands of us poured into the darkness, carrying children, bread, belongings and memories, feet struck the earth in every direction, Women called for their families,Children cried, men shouted instructions and the animals stumbled alongside us.

And somehow, beneath all the fear and confusion, there was something else.

Hope.

For the first time in my life, we were not running because someone was chasing us.

We were running because we were free.
