<p>ASHES OF TODAY</p><p><br/></p><p>The ritualistic checking of social media posts</p><p>Left me that morning, uncomposed;</p><p>The headlines—children burnt like toast.</p><p>I thought it was only animals we roast?</p><p>Bodies, once full of life, became ashes and ghosts.</p><p><br/></p><p>Fear, anger and pain—emotions running wild,</p><p>Yet our anguish is dismissed as mild;</p><p>Our comfort, a bag of rice,</p><p>And stew—promises and speeches cooked with lies,</p><p>As though food meant more than our children's lives.</p><p><br/></p><p>That morning I regretted getting data,</p><p>As I saw bodies burnt in Yelewata;</p><p>The sun, though bright, was glowing with sorrow,</p><p>Children made orphans, wives made widows,</p><p>Ashes of today, yet once the leaders of tomorrow.</p><p><br/></p><p>This is more than a literary piece to me, </p><p>It's a cry from the daughter of the soil that consumed it's children before they could even walk.</p><p>I couldn't write on the killings when it happened because of the fear that had gripped the campus and Benue State at large </p><p>May the souls of the departed Rest In Peace</p>
