Wear her shoes and walk a mile or two perhaps you'd understand what it feels like not to be wanted. To know Leah is to know what it means to bear the burden of a one-sided relationship.

The first seven years of love-inspired labour was long enough for her not to have noticed how passionately in love Jacob was with Rachel. But on the day the duo were to be 'officially' wedded, a scheme was plotted and Leah didn't fight it. Tradition aside, had she, at some point, imagined been loved the way Jacob had loved Rachel? The likelihood of this is not to be written off.

An inebriated Jacob, filled with excitement and wine, had lain in his chamber, waiting for the human-prize he had sacrificed seven years for but it turned out, a "what I ordered vs what I got" experience would be the shocking reality he was going to wake up to the morning after. But this is really not about Jacob, at least as far as the focus of this post is concerned. Let's stay with Leah.

So it was a night of wine-induced passion as Jacob, blinded by wine, slept with another. As it is with all mornings, realization brought clarity. Both had woken up to a truth that felt like a punch in the gut. But how did Leah feel upon realizing she wasn't Jacob's choice? How had he looked at her? To say condescendingly wouldn't be far from the truth.

How did she take it when she found out Jacob was willing to go another seven years to get Rachel? Seven long years, spent in the haunting knowledge that the man she called husband didn't hide the truth which was a pill too hard to swallow. Within the span of seven years, some kind of attachment must have grown in Leah. But no, attachment or not, Jacob only had eyes for another.

And so the life of Leah is a reminder that we would never meet up with expectations of those we love but don't love us in return if, from the beginning, they didn't choose us. While it's a beautiful thing to desire a person, it's crucial that they want us too. Loving another is beautiful but nothing, absolutely nothing beats being loved back by them.

Funnily enough, Jacob had been sleeping with Leah even while his heart still strengthened his hands to put in the work for Rachel. Leah was available to satisfy Jacob's sexual urge but not good enough to be genuinely wanted. It makes me wonder, really, how many Leahs we have walking the earth today; needed only when an erection demands release. They don't mind serving the purpose of existing only as a momentary scratch to an itch.

So today, I speak to the Leahs stuck with Jacobs, all your grand gestures sadly, will never make you a Rachel. You best believe men are Jacobs when they see their Rachels. What's interesting is the fact that a man can also be a Leah; he does the most to be seen and appreciated (Mr. Nice guy) but unfortunately, the lady he wants wants another.

So, dear Leah, you deserve to be loved like Rachel, you deserve a love that is unafraid to commit energy and time. You are also a prize, the only thing is, you're not Jacob's.
