THE WEIGHT OF MONDAY

Once upon a time, scratch that, you and I know that it's more than once that we, on a Thursday like that of last week, looked longingly to a weekend that held so much promise. The slow build to excitement and rest like the delicious aroma of jollof rice that whets the appetite.

Then came Friday, ripe with the expectation of everything that's pleasantly not work related because the week, like many before it, is ending. Life once again is taking on an unrushed tempo as the corporate world is about to pause and breathe.

The weekend starts on a jolly note, a slow Saturday morning and then, the unnecessary rush of time kicks in: it ends almost immediately. Sunday feels more or less like "jara" because, tell me why, I just got back from church and it's 6pm. Need I add that Monday doesn't start on Monday mornings but at the dusk of Sundays? Did somebody just call it SMONDAY?

Well, we are back here to the busiest, more serious, least loved, well, except a public holiday by a quirk of time and chance, happens to fall on it. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Monday. The absolute dread of many a 9-5er.

It feels almost as if the verse in the Bible that says, "This is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it", was not talking about Monday because, it turns out, the hate people have for their jobs, they take it out on Monday. Poor guy!

However, herein lies the crux of my pre-dawn musing: Mondays, as a matter of fact, are mini-Januaries, hated mainly for their position but absolutely nothing about them is unlovable.

Mondays are silent reminders to a anyone who is gainfully employed that the world — your world — acknowledges your value hence, your showing up, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on the angle you're looking from, is a non-negotiable.

Mondays really don't have to be the weekly burials of excitement because goals must be smashed. It's funny how the day doesn't seem to be in a hurry to leave like the last three days before it.

Mondays, I have come to know, take the shape and weight we make them to be. But I make bold to say Mondays can be pleasantly light because, beyond every scintilla of doubt, I believe it's the actual weight of our perception of that innocent day of the week that makes it feel like an unbearable chore. There is beauty in every day, Mondays inclusive.

Love your life enough to say THANK GOD IT'S MONDAY!
