Can Digital Skills Really Change the Life of an Average Nigerian?

I used to think digital skills were just another thing people talked about online.You see someone making money from graphic design, video editing, coding, or freelancing, and you start wondering, “Is this actually possible for someone like me?”Especially in Nigeria.For many of us, the reality is that having a degree doesn't automatically mean you'll get a good job. Sometimes, you apply for jobs over and over again and hear nothing back. Other times, you know you have potential, but you simply don't have the opportunity to prove it.That's one reason I started taking digital skills more seriously.I'm not saying learning a digital skill will suddenly make you rich. It won't.There are people who have spent months learning and still struggled to get their first client. There are days when you question whether all the time you're putting into learning is even worth it.But here's what I have realized:A digital skill can give you another option.Instead of depending completely on someone to give you a job, you can learn something that allows you to offer a service.You can design for a small business owner. Edit videos for a creator. Manage someone's social media. Write for a brand. Work with clients outside Nigeria.You may start small. Very small.Your first client might not pay much. Your first design might not look impressive. You might even make mistakes that you will laugh about later.But you're building something.And I think that's the part we sometimes overlook.Digital skills don't guarantee success. They don't remove the struggles of being Nigerian, and they definitely don't make money appear overnight.What they can do is give you leverage.They can give you the ability to say, “I may not have the opportunity I want yet, but I have something I can use to create one.”I'm still learning myself. I'm still figuring things out. But the more I learn, the more I realize that sometimes the biggest change doesn't happen when someone gives you an opportunity.It happens when you become skilled enough to create one for yourself.So, can digital skills really change the life of an average Nigerian?I believe they can.Not because the skill itself is magic, but because of what you can build with it if you're willing to keep learning, keep practicing, and keep showing up.
