Love: The Romance We were Sold

You still don’t get “love”. It’s ridiculous.You hated the concept of it.Maybe that was why you disliked romance.The movies.The books.They were all about it.They all revolved around love.It was stupid.Weird and cringe.Filled with propaganda depicting love in a way it was never going to be.Fantasy sold as truth.Disguised as happily ever after.And people still got fooled by it.What was love anyways.Because people made it seem like a fairytale.Like it was worth everything.Like it was worth that much.Worth throwing your life away because of another person.Devoting your life to another person who wasn’t entirely devoted to you.People think it’s so beautiful but it really isn’t.You’d seen people. Heard their stories.And seen what love had done to them.It was bad.It drained them.Drains their will.Feeds off their pain and their emotions.It’s parasitic.Painful.Inconvenient.It stripped you down till your happiness depended on another person existence.And somehow people still saw all that as beautiful.And when they eventually left.You were left hurt.Broken.Then came the tears.Then you forgetting how to live.How you lived before they waltzed into your life different from how they waltzed out.Society lies about a lot of things.They tell you love is beautiful.But they don’t talk about the dependence that comes with it.The pain.They say love is blind shouldn’t that be taken as a warning?How was losing yourself in someone considered romantic?They didn’t tell you in love your happiness was tied to the other.Instead they told you and made you believe it was a beautiful thing.All day, everyday.If it’s so selfless why does it ask for so much of you?If it’s so pure why does it fade?If it’s unconditional why do people in love fall out and their relationship end?If you ask me it’s just another social construct.Because tell me why the greatest proof of love had to be how much you’re willing to endure all in the sake of it?If love isn’t possesive why does jealousy exist?Come to think of it is jealousy really an insecurity or an evidence of love?Was the problem really love itself or its unhealthy attachments?Why was everyone expected to fall in love?When you think about love a song comes to you.“I Love You “, by Amma.It’s about a girl lost in love.Emotionally tied to someone who may never choose her.It’s in contrast with your thoughts.And it also raised a lot of questions.“Believing we can happen is the only hope that I hold on to”Why should hope be the only thing keeping you?“You make me change my ways in ways that I don’t want to”Why are you calling that love wasn’t that losing yourself?Why was becoming less of yourself proof of loving someone more?So you tell me why should I willingly choose that.
