My Mom's Prayer Vs My Real Life
<p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>Every morning my mom prays for me by 5am. Loud.</p><p><br/></p><p>"My daughter will be a great lawyer! She will be a SAN! She will make us proud! She will work in a big chamber!"</p><p><br/></p><p>And I will be lying on my bed, looking at my ring light, with 20 wigs behind my door, and editing a makeup video that made me N200k last week.</p><p><br/></p><p>I graduated with Law 3 years ago. I hated every single year. I only went because my mom said "All my mates' children are lawyers and doctors."</p><p><br/></p><p>I did NYSC in a law firm. I cried every day in the bathroom. I knew I didn't want that life.</p><p><br/></p><p>So I started makeup quietly. Small small. One client. Two clients. Then TikTok. Then Instagram. Now I have 80k followers and I make more than the lawyers in my old firm.</p><p><br/></p><p>But my mom doesn't know. She thinks I'm still applying to law firms.</p><p><br/></p><p>Last Sunday, she introduced me to her friend.</p><p><br/></p><p>"This is my daughter, the lawyer. She is just waiting for a good firm to call her."</p><p><br/></p><p>I smiled. I died inside.</p><p><br/></p><p>Mommy, I'm not waiting for any firm. I'm waiting for Sephora to reply my email. Mommy, your daughter the "lawyer" has a class of 30 girls learning makeup tomorrow.</p><p><br/></p><p>I love my mom. I know she prayed hard for me to be a lawyer because she wants me to be safe. She thinks law = success. She doesn't know content creation is also success.</p><p><br/></p><p>Yesterday I finally showed her my page. My videos. My bank alert.</p><p><br/></p><p>She was quiet for 10 minutes. Then she said, "So you can actually pay house rent with this powder powder?"</p><p><br/></p><p>I said "Yes mom."</p><p><br/></p><p>She said, "Okay. But you will still add 'Esq' to your Instagram bio sha. Let me have something to tell my friends."</p><p><br/></p><p>We both laughed.</p><p><br/></p><p>*Two Cent:* Your parents' prayer for you is protection, not prison. They want you to be okay. Sometimes you have to show them that "okay" can look different from what they imagined. Respect their dream, but live YOUR life.</p><p><br/></p><p>Are you living your parents' dream or YOUR dream?
