(PART 2): THE BOY WHO WAITED
<p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn did not sleep again.</p><p><br/></p><p>She sat against the headboard until sunrise.</p><p><br/></p><p>Waiting.</p><p><br/></p><p>Listening.</p><p><br/></p><p>Watching the corner where Silas had stood.</p><p><br/></p><p>But morning came.</p><p><br/></p><p>Golden light spilled through the curtains.</p><p><br/></p><p>Birds sang.</p><p><br/></p><p>And for the first time in years—</p><p><br/></p><p>She felt relief.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because daylight meant safety.</p><p><br/></p><p>Didn't it?</p><p><br/></p><p>Then she noticed something impossible.</p><p><br/></p><p>On her bedside table sat two cups.</p><p><br/></p><p>One was hers.</p><p><br/></p><p>The other was filled with fresh rainwater.</p><p><br/></p><p>And beside it, written in the condensation:</p><p><br/></p><p>I never leave.</p><p><br/></p><p>The message disappeared seconds later.</p><p><br/></p><p>As though it had never existed.</p><p><br/></p><p>At breakfast, her mother looked exhausted.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dark circles beneath her eyes.</p><p><br/></p><p>Hands trembling around a mug of coffee.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Evelyn," she said quietly, "there's something I never told you."</p><p><br/></p><p>The room felt smaller.</p><p><br/></p><p>"When you were six..."</p><p><br/></p><p>Her voice cracked.</p><p><br/></p><p>"The accident wasn't supposed to happen."</p><p><br/></p><p>Silence.</p><p><br/></p><p>"You and another child went to the lake during the storm."</p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn's heartbeat slowed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another child.</p><p><br/></p><p>No.</p><p><br/></p><p>No.</p><p><br/></p><p>"You fell into the water."</p><p><br/></p><p>Her mother began crying.</p><p><br/></p><p>"The rescue team found only you."</p><p><br/></p><p>A terrible pressure built inside Evelyn's head.</p><p><br/></p><p>Images.</p><p><br/></p><p>Rain.</p><p><br/></p><p>Screaming.</p><p><br/></p><p>Cold water.</p><p><br/></p><p>A hand reaching for hers.</p><p><br/></p><p>Grey eyes.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Silas..."</p><p><br/></p><p>The name escaped her lips before she realized it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her mother froze.</p><p><br/></p><p>"We never knew who he was."</p><p><br/></p><p>Everything stopped.</p><p><br/></p><p>And suddenly—</p><p><br/></p><p>She remembered.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not all at once.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not clearly.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just enough.</p><p><br/></p><p>A boy standing beside her beneath the rain.</p><p><br/></p><p>Laughing.</p><p><br/></p><p>Running.</p><p><br/></p><p>Promising they would always be friends.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then darkness.</p><p><br/></p><p>Water.</p><p><br/></p><p>Separation.</p><p><br/></p><p>And one final sentence:</p><p><br/></p><p>Wait for me.</p><p><br/></p><p>The memory vanished.</p><p><br/></p><p>A violent knocking erupted from upstairs.</p><p><br/></p><p>Three knocks.</p><p><br/></p><p>Slow.</p><p><br/></p><p>Deliberate.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her bedroom.</p><p><br/></p><p>No one was there.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another three knocks.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her mother stood.</p><p><br/></p><p>Pale.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Evelyn..."</p><p><br/></p><p>The third set of knocks came.</p><p><br/></p><p>Louder.</p><p><br/></p><p>The house lights flickered.</p><p><br/></p><p>And every window fogged over at once.</p><p><br/></p><p>Words began appearing across the glass.</p><p><br/></p><p>Over and over.</p><p><br/></p><p>YOU REMEMBERED.</p><p><br/></p><p>YOU REMEMBERED.</p><p><br/></p><p>YOU REMEMBERED.</p><p><br/></p><p>The temperature dropped.</p><p><br/></p><p>Rain started falling.</p><p><br/></p><p>Inside the house.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tiny droplets descending from the ceiling.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her mother whispered a prayer.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then came the voice.</p><p><br/></p><p>Soft.</p><p><br/></p><p>Gentle.</p><p><br/></p><p>Right behind Evelyn.</p><p><br/></p><p>"You promised."</p><p><br/></p><p>She turned.</p><p><br/></p><p>Silas stood in the hallway.</p><p><br/></p><p>No longer hidden by shadow.</p><p><br/></p><p>No longer distant.</p><p><br/></p><p>He looked exactly thirteen years old.</p><p><br/></p><p>Exactly as he always had.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because he had never grown older.</p><p><br/></p><p>He smiled.</p><p><br/></p><p>But there was unbearable sadness behind it.</p><p><br/></p><p>"They made you forget me."</p><p><br/></p><p>The rain around him never touched the floor.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I waited every day."</p><p><br/></p><p>A pause.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Every year."</p><p><br/></p><p>His grey eyes never left hers.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I thought if I stayed long enough..."</p><p><br/></p><p>Another step.</p><p><br/></p><p>"...you would come back."</p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn's fear mixed with something else.</p><p><br/></p><p>Grief.</p><p><br/></p><p>Recognition.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I didn't leave you on purpose," she whispered.</p><p><br/></p><p>Silas closed his eyes.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I know."</p><p><br/></p><p>The answer was immediate.</p><p><br/></p><p>Certain.</p><p><br/></p><p>Heartbreaking.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I've always known."</p><p><br/></p><p>Silence filled the house.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then his expression changed.</p><p><br/></p><p>The sadness remained.</p><p><br/></p><p>But something older moved beneath it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Something patient.</p><p><br/></p><p>Something that had spent thirteen years alone.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Do you know what loneliness becomes," he asked softly, "when it lasts long enough?"</p><p><br/></p><p>No answer came.</p><p><br/></p><p>"It becomes hunger."</p><p><br/></p><p>Every light went out.</p><p><br/></p><p>Darkness swallowed the room.</p><p><br/></p><p>Yet Silas remained visible.</p><p><br/></p><p>Standing impossibly still.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I kept myself together with memories of you."</p><p><br/></p><p>His voice came from everywhere.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Your birthdays."</p><p><br/></p><p>A whisper.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Your laughter."</p><p><br/></p><p>Closer.</p><p><br/></p><p>"The stories you told me."</p><p><br/></p><p>The walls groaned.</p><p><br/></p><p>"And now that you remember..."</p><p><br/></p><p>The smile returned.</p><p><br/></p><p>"...I can finally stop pretending to be alone."</p><p><br/></p><p>A hand touched Evelyn's shoulder.</p><p><br/></p><p>Ice cold.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I don't want to hurt you."</p><p><br/></p><p>Another hand.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I only want what you promised."</p><p><br/></p><p>The darkness thickened.</p><p><br/></p><p>The house itself seemed to hold its breath.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Forever means forever."</p><p><br/></p><p>Suddenly—</p><p><br/></p><p>Her mother grabbed her hand.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Run!"</p><p><img alt="" src="/media/inline_insight_image/944ef17ae677faf4f072e23227296d74.jpg"/></p><p>They stumbled outside into the storm.</p><p><br/></p><p>Rain hammered the streets.</p><p><br/></p><p>Thunder shook the sky.</p><p><br/></p><p>Behind them, every light in the house turned on simultaneously.</p><p><br/></p><p>A silhouette stood at the upstairs window.</p><p><br/></p><p>Watching.</p><p><br/></p><p>Waiting.</p><p><br/></p><p>Smiling.</p><p><br/></p><p>They drove to the old lake before dawn.</p><p><br/></p><p>The place from the accident.</p><p><br/></p><p>The water remained perfectly still despite the storm.</p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn approached the shore.</p><p><br/></p><p>And memories returned completely.</p><p><br/></p><p>Two children.</p><p><br/></p><p>A dare.</p><p><br/></p><p>A sudden fall.</p><p><br/></p><p>She had reached the bank.</p><p><br/></p><p>Silas had not.</p><p><br/></p><p>And while rescuers carried her away—</p><p><br/></p><p>He had remained in the freezing water.</p><p><br/></p><p>Calling her name.</p><p><br/></p><p>Waiting.</p><p><br/></p><p>Always waiting.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tears streamed down her face.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I'm sorry," she whispered.</p><p><br/></p><p>The wind stopped.</p><p><br/></p><p>The rain ceased.</p><p><br/></p><p>Silas appeared across the water.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not frightening.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not angry.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just terribly, impossibly alone.</p><p><br/></p><p>"You came back," he said.</p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn nodded.</p><p><br/></p><p>For the first time in thirteen years—</p><p><br/></p><p>He smiled like a child again.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I thought everyone forgot."</p><p><br/></p><p>"No," she said.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I remember."</p><p><br/></p><p>The silence that followed felt endless.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then Silas looked toward the dark surface beneath him.</p><p><br/></p><p>Something moved there.</p><p><br/></p><p>Shapes.</p><p><br/></p><p>Shadows.</p><p><br/></p><p>Waiting.</p><p><br/></p><p>Calling.</p><p><br/></p><p>A place he had refused to enter.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because of a promise.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because of her.</p><p><br/></p><p>Fear crossed his face.</p><p><br/></p><p>Real fear.</p><p><br/></p><p>"If I let go," he whispered, "I'll be alone again."</p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn took a step forward.</p><p><br/></p><p>"You won't be forgotten."</p><p><br/></p><p>Another step.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I'll tell your story."</p><p><br/></p><p>The wind returned.</p><p><br/></p><p>Gentle.</p><p><br/></p><p>Warm.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I'll remember you."</p><p><br/></p><p>Silas stared at her.</p><p><br/></p><p>And slowly—</p><p><br/></p><p>The years of waiting seemed to lift from his shoulders.</p><p><br/></p><p>His smile softened.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Best friends remember each other," he said.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Always."</p><p><br/></p><p>The lake grew brighter.</p><p><br/></p><p>The shadows beneath the water disappeared.</p><p><br/></p><p>Silas began to fade.</p><p><br/></p><p>Rain passed through him.</p><p><br/></p><p>Morning sunlight touched his face.</p><p><br/></p><p>For the very first time.</p><p><br/></p><p>He laughed quietly.</p><p><br/></p><p>As though experiencing dawn itself.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Beautiful," he whispered.</p><p><br/></p><p>And then—</p><p><br/></p><p>He was gone.</p><p><br/></p><p>Only ripples remained.</p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn stood there until sunrise.</p><p><br/></p><p>The nightmare was over.</p><p><br/></p><p>Or so she believed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Weeks passed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Life returned to normal.</p><p><br/></p><p>People smiled at her.</p><p><br/></p><p>She made friends.</p><p><br/></p><p>The empty seat by the window remained empty.</p><p><br/></p><p>No voices.</p><p><br/></p><p>No footsteps.</p><p><br/></p><p>No whispers at 2:13 a.m.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>Until one autumn evening.</p><p><br/></p><p>She was unpacking old boxes in the attic.</p><p><br/></p><p>Inside one dusty container lay a photograph she had never seen before.</p><p><br/></p><p>Two children stood beside the lake.</p><p><br/></p><p>One was Evelyn.</p><p><br/></p><p>The other was a dark-haired boy with grey eyes.</p><p><br/></p><p>Silas.</p><p><br/></p><p>Real.</p><p><br/></p><p>Smiling.</p><p><br/></p><p>Alive.</p><p><br/></p><p>Written on the back, in faded handwriting, were six words:</p><p><br/></p><p>Friends forever. No matter who leaves first.</p><p><br/></p><p>The lights in the attic flickered.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just once.</p><p><br/></p><p>A cold breeze touched her cheek.</p><p><br/></p><p>And somewhere—</p><p><br/></p><p>Very far away—</p><p><br/></p><p>A familiar voice whispered gently:</p><p><br/></p><p>"Thank you for remembering me."</p><p><br/></p><p>Evelyn smiled through her tears.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then froze.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because the old mirror leaning against the wall reflected the entire attic.</p><p><br/></p><p>The boxes.</p><p><br/></p><p>The window.</p><p><br/></p><p>The dust.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her.</p><p><br/></p><p>And standing behind her—</p><p><br/></p><p>For only a single heartbeat—</p><p><br/></p><p>Was Silas.</p><p><br/></p><p>Smiling.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not alone anymore.</p><p><br/></p><p>The next moment, he was gone.</p><p><br/></p><p>But the mirror remained fogged.</p><p><br/></p><p>And slowly—</p><p><br/></p><p>Letter by letter—</p><p><br/></p><p>Words appeared upon the glass.</p><p><br/></p><p>FOREVER IS A VERY LONG TIME.</p><p><img alt="" src="/media/inline_insight_image/5695585e8a77578e56773929eea7df40.jpg"/></p><p>THE END.</p>
