Sometimes, I Feel Alone

Sometimes I wonder if anyone would notice if I became quiet.

Not completely disappeared.

Just quieter than usual.

If I stopped replying to messages as quickly, stopped laughing as much, stopped showing up everywhere, would anyone ask what happened?

Sometimes I think they would.

Other times, I’m not so sure.

I can sit in a room full of people and still feel like I’m somewhere else. Everyone is talking, laughing, sharing stories, taking pictures, making memories. I’m there too. I smile when I’m supposed to. I laugh when something is funny. I join the conversation and pretend I’m enjoying myself.

But somehow, I still feel alone.

It’s strange how you can be surrounded by people and still feel like nobody really sees you.

Sometimes I wish someone would look beyond my smile.

Not just ask, “How are you?” because that’s what people normally say.

I mean really ask.

“How are you?”

And actually wait for the answer.

Because the truth is, I’m not always okay.

I just don’t know how to say it.

I don’t know how to explain the feeling that sits quietly inside me. There isn’t always a reason I can point to. Sometimes nothing terrible happened that day. Sometimes everything seems normal, but I still feel this emptiness that I can’t put into words.

And when someone asks what’s wrong, I usually say, “Nothing.”

Not because there is nothing wrong.

I just don’t know where to begin.

I miss having someone I could talk to without thinking too much about what I’m saying. Someone I could call when my mind was too loud. Someone I could sit beside in silence without feeling like I had to entertain them.

Someone who wouldn’t make me feel like a burden.

I miss that kind of connection.

The kind where you don’t have to explain every little thing because the person already knows when something is different.

The kind where silence doesn’t feel awkward.

The kind where you can say, “I’m having a bad day,” and you don’t have to feel ashamed about it.

Maybe that’s what loneliness really is.

Maybe it isn’t simply being alone.

Maybe it’s having so many things inside you and having nobody you feel safe enough to tell.

It’s having a story in your head and no one to listen to it.

It’s wanting to say, “I’m tired,” but worrying that someone will think you’re complaining.

It’s wanting to say, “I need you,” but being scared they might not need you back.

So you stay quiet.

You convince yourself that you can handle it.

You tell yourself that everyone has their own problems and that yours probably aren’t important enough to share.

You say, “I’ll be fine.”

And maybe you will.

But sometimes I wonder how much easier it would be if I didn’t always have to be fine by myself.

I wish I could tell someone about the little things that bother me.

The things I remember at night.

The conversations I replay in my head.

The people I miss but never talk about.

The things I wanted to say but kept inside.

The days when I wake up already feeling tired, even though I slept.

The moments when I’m surrounded by people but still wish someone would come closer.

I wish someone would notice the little changes.

The quieter voice.

The forced smile.

The way I suddenly stop talking.

The way I say “I’m okay” a little too quickly.

Maybe then I wouldn’t have to explain everything.

Maybe I could just sit there and let someone understand.

But I know I can’t always wait for someone to notice.

Sometimes I have to admit that I’m lonely.

Sometimes I have to be honest and say, “I don’t feel okay today.”

Maybe there’s nothing wrong with needing someone.

Maybe being strong doesn’t mean handling everything alone.

Maybe we all need someone sometimes.

Someone to listen.

Someone to stay.

Someone who doesn’t disappear just because we’re having a difficult day.

I’m still learning that.

I’m still learning that I don’t have to hide every feeling just because I’m afraid of being misunderstood.

I’m still learning that asking for company doesn’t make me weak.

And maybe one day, I’ll find people I don’t have to pretend around.

People I can laugh with, cry with, sit in silence with.

Until then, I’m trying.

I’m trying to be patient with myself.

I’m trying to remember that feeling lonely doesn’t mean I’m unwanted.

It doesn’t mean nobody cares.

It just means that right now, I’m longing for a connection I haven’t found yet.

And maybe that connection is still somewhere ahead of me.

Maybe there’s someone I haven’t met yet who will understand the things I struggle to explain.

Maybe there are better days waiting for me.

So tonight, I’ll keep going.

I’ll breathe.

I’ll let myself feel what I feel.

And maybe tomorrow will be different.

But if you’re reading this and you feel the same way, I hope you know something:

You don’t always have to hide behind “I’m fine.”

You deserve to be heard too.

You deserve someone who asks and actually listens.

Are you really okay?
