Character is the inner quality of an individual that manifest in behavior, or what determines whether a person will behave in an honorable way or a dishonorable way. It is what we are really like when all the veneers are stripped away, what we are like when no one is around and no one is looking and no one will find out. There are different character types; Expedient: means doing what works best to get what one wants instead of doing what is right. This person almost always behaves in a self-centered way, doing exactly what he or she wants in the pursuit of self-gratification. Malleable: This person has no firmly set character but is molded by those around him. He or she is the type who often wants to please other people. Legalistic: This is the person who carefully lives his or her life according to an external set of rules or laws. Doing the right thing is a matter of obedience to the laws that have been established. Principled: this person, whose character is the most maturely developed, has come to the place where he or she lives a life in keeping with the moral values that have been presented to us over and over again. Decisions are made, actions taken, and lines drawn because they grow out of a deep sense of integrity, fairness, commitment to others, commitment to God, and out of a deep inner respect for principles that are worth upholding and maintaining no matter what.

Strong and true moral character is not simply a matter of environment, family background, parental and peer influence, and hard work, it is daily decision of doing what is right all the time. Character is of utmost concern to our Creator as well. History has shown that the most important quality a true leader should and must possess is the moral force of a noble and stable character. The greatest obstacle to a leader’s success is a deficit of character. Moral deficits frequently lead people to negative or ruinous consequences such as missing out on promotions and advancements, being fired from their jobs, losing their life savings, betraying their families, surrendering their lifelong dreams, and going to prison. A leader must know how to establish a solid foundation for living that will sustain him and keep him on the right path in times of uncertainty, temptation, and crisis. All of us are people in process, and none of us has attained full moral character, maturity, and consistency. But however inconsistent we may be, it is not too late to begin to grow in strong character again. Good character is like a personal security system for your life.
