The Nigerian Obsession With “What Will People Say?”

“What will people say?”

I think almost every Nigerian has heard this sentence at some point.

Sometimes, it feels like we make decisions not because we want to, but because we are afraid of what people will think.

You want to study something different? “What will people say?”

You want to leave a job you hate? “What will people say?”

You're not ready for marriage? “What will people say?”

You start a small business and it doesn't work? People will talk.

But the funny thing is, people will always talk.

If you succeed, they will have something to say. If you fail, they will still have something to say. If you stay single, they will ask questions. If you get married, they'll ask when the children are coming.

So why spend your whole life trying to satisfy people who aren't living your life?

I'm not saying we should ignore everyone. Advice from family and friends can be valuable. But sometimes, we need to make decisions based on what is actually right for us.

Because at the end of the day, they will go home and you will still have to live with your choices.

Maybe it's time we ask ourselves a different question:

“What do I actually want?”
