THE UNFINISHED MELODY

The room was dark, except for the soft glow of moonlight spilling across the floor. Jonghyun sat by the piano, humming that familiar tune, the one he never finished. His voice was as warm as I remembered, gentle and steady, wrapping around every note like a promise.

“Why aren’t you sleeping?” he asked, glancing at me with that teasing smile that always gave him away before he laughed.

“I couldn’t,” I said. “You were playing too beautifully.”

He chuckled softly. “You always say that when you don’t want to admit you missed me.”

I swallowed hard, blinking away the tears stinging my eyes. “I did,” I whispered. “I miss you, Jjong. Every day.”

His expression softened. For a moment, he just looked at me, that kind of look that said everything words never could. Then he tilted his head, still smiling. “Where else would I be? I told you, didn’t I? Music doesn’t end. It just changes form.”

Then he turned back to the piano. His fingers danced across the keys... delicate, certain and the melody filled the room again. But this time, it sounded different. Brighter. Like it carried something I wasn’t supposed to hold onto forever.

“Keep singing,” he said, not looking up. “That’s how I’ll find you again.”

The words lingered, soft and infinite, until the sound began to fade, the piano, his voice, even the faint hum of the room.

And then...

I woke up.

The piano was gone. The room was quiet. My face was wet. But somewhere in the distance, I swore I could still hear it, that unfinished melody, echoing like a heartbeat that refused to stop.

Jonghyun was gone.

But the song… and my love for him, still remained.

~Liss Whispers
