Trying to Unlove You

Chapter 3:The Girl Who Helped Me Heal

Healing didn't happen overnight.

He continue his story. I was listening.

To be honest...

I don't even remember when it began.

All I remember is that, little by little, someone refused to let me fight my battles alone

She was my ex-girlfriend's best friend. If someone had told me she would become one of the most important people in my life during that season, I wouldn't have believed them.

At first, she was simply checking up on me. She would ask if I'm okay anytime she saw me and at times send messages to me.

Whenever she noticed I sounded different, she'd ask, "Are you sure you're fine?"

Sometimes I lied.

Sometimes I admitted I wasn't.

But she never judged me.

She never forced me to talk.

She simply stayed.

Looking back now, I think that's what saved me.

She reminded me that life didn't end with one heartbreak.

She reminded me that there were still people who cared.

Slowly...

The pain became easier to carry.

I laughed again.

Not because I had forgotten what happened...

But because someone helped me remember that I could still smile.

Months passed, and our friendship became stronger.

We talked almost every day.

She understood my silence.

She celebrated my small victories.

Whenever I felt like giving up on love completely, she reminded me that not everyone would hurt me.

Then suddenly

i noticed She's always staring at me and smiling. Then I realized she has fallen in love with me.

For a some days, I didn't know what to say or do whenever she's around.

Part of me was surprised and always quiet . Another part of me wasn't.

Deep down, I think I had already noticed the way she cared for me.

I cared about her too.

How could I not?

She had been there when I felt completely broken.

She had helped me stand again when I thought I would never recover.

So...

i was just thinking Alot of things, I asked myself questions.

Do I love her as a friend?

or Do I love her as someone i will be spending my life with?

still trying to figure out which is which her parents conversations about the future became more serious.

They talked about marriage with excitement.

I suddenly got my answer to the question, I saw her as a friend, a good friend who helped me heal.

I now know what I want and whom I want to be with because every time I imagined spending the rest of my life with her...

Something inside me became unsettled.

It wasn't because she was a bad person.

She wasn't.

She was kind.

She was thoughtful.

She had a beautiful heart.

I'll always be grateful for everything she did for me.

But gratitude isn't the same as love.

The more I searched my heart, the more I realized something painful.

I admired her.

I respected her.

I cared deeply about her.

But I wasn't in love with her, the way she desired.

I also realized that the qualities I had always prayed for in a wife were different from what I was seeing.

I wanted someone whose values naturally aligned with mine.

Someone I could build a lifetime with.

Someone who challenged me to become a better man, not because she tried to change me, but because of the kind of person she was.

Those thoughts haunted me.

Every single day.

Instead of talking to her honestly...

I made the biggest mistake of my life.

I became distant.

I withdrew.

Sometimes I answered her messages late.

i was just avoiding her .

She didn't deserve that, she deserved honesty. Not confusion.

She deserved an explanation. Not silence.

She was hurt, and I couldn't blame her.

If I had been in her position...

I would have felt the same way. To this day, I regret the way I handled everything.

Not because leaving was the wrong decision...

But because I didn't communicate it with the kindness she deserved.

After I left, I promised myself something.

I would never enter another relationship unless I was completely certain.

No more guessing.

No more hoping love would grow.

No more risking someone else's heart while trying to understand my own.

I thought that promise would protect me.

I had no idea life was about to test it.

A few months later...

I met you. We met in school. At first, you were just another student I happened to know. Then we became friends. Somehow, without either of us forcing it, our conversations became longer.

Your presence became familiar.

And before I realized what was happening...

You had quietly found a place in my heart.

You were different.

You listened without judging.

You understood without demanding explanations.

You respected people.

You carried yourself with grace.

Everything I had once prayed for...

I began to see in you.

That terrified me.

Because for the first time in a long time...

I wasn't afraid of being hurt.

I was afraid of hurting you.

So I searched for an excuse.

Something that would convince both of us that walking away was the right thing to do.

The age difference became that excuse.

I repeated it so many times that I almost believed it myself.

But deep inside...

I knew the truth.

It was never really about your age.

It was also about a man who was still learning that a broken heart could love again.

And perhaps...

That was the truth I should have told you from the very beginning.

To be continued....

written by Shuliê -ink 🖋️

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
