The storm we couldn't see

A story inspired by True Event

Chapter 3: The Battle No One Could See

If you met Mrs. Grace outside her home, you would never believe she was battling depression.

She loved her job as a teacher. Every morning, she dressed neatly, prepared for work, greeted everyone with a warm smile, and taught her pupils with dedication. To those around her, she looked like a woman who had everything under control.

No one could tell she was hurting.

Not even the people who saw her every day.

To the world, Mrs. Grace was cheerful, hardworking, and full of life.

But behind the walls of her home...

A completely different battle was taking place.

Amara saw it every single day.

Like her mother, Amara also left home each morning for work. She taught at a primary school while preparing to sit for JAMB once again. Anyone who saw them leaving together would never have imagined the burden both mother and daughter carried in silence.

People admired Mrs. Grace.

Some even praised her strength and commitment.

Whenever Amara or another family member tried to explain what was happening at home, many people found it difficult to believe.

"She doesn't look sick."

"She was laughing today."

"She taught my child so well."

"Are you sure you're telling the truth?"

Those words hurt more than anyone realized.

Only the family and a few people who were close enough to witness the situation believed them. Everyone else judged what they saw in public, unaware of what happened once Mrs. Grace returned home.

The real struggle began when she walked through the front door.

It was as though the smile she wore outside disappeared the moment she entered the house.

Some evenings, anger overwhelmed her.

She shouted over the smallest things.

She said words that pierced the hearts of her children.

There were days when she became physically aggressive, hitting the very children she loved more than life itself.

The house that had once echoed with laughter slowly became a place of silence and uncertainty.

Every evening, Amara and her siblings listened for the sound of the gate opening.

Not because they didn't love their mother...

But because they never knew what kind of evening awaited them.

Would she come home calm?

Or would another storm begin?

Fear quietly became part of their daily lives.

Many nights, Amara lay awake, unable to sleep.

She cried silently into her pillow so no one would hear her.

Sometimes she wondered if anyone outside their home would ever believe the pain they lived with.

What hurt the most was not the shouting.

It was watching the woman who had raised them with so much love slowly become someone they no longer recognized.

Yet, even in the middle of that darkness, there were moments that reminded Amara who her mother truly was.

Before leaving for work each morning, Mrs. Grace would often pray for her children.

Sometimes she would look at them with tears in her eyes and say,

"No curse spoken against my children will ever succeed."

Those words stayed with Amara.

They reminded her that the loving mother she knew was still there.

Depression had stolen Mrs. Grace's peace.

It had changed her behavior.

It had shaken the entire family.

But it had not taken away her love for her children.

That was the battle no one outside their home could see.

The world saw a smiling teacher.

Her family saw a woman silently crying for help.

And every night, before closing her eyes, Amara whispered the same prayer:

"Jehovah... please bring my mother back to us."

To be continued...

watch out for chapter Four

Thanks for Reading 🙏

written by Shuliê -ink 🖋️

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
