Horror: Ward B

The first rule every new intern learned at Adebayo Memorial Hospital was simple:

Never enter Ward B alone after 2:00 a.m.

Nobody explained why.

When I asked, the senior nurses would only smile and say, "You'll understand one day."

I laughed it off. Hospitals were full of rumours, and I believed every strange story had a simple explanation.

Three weeks into my training, I was assigned to the night shift.

At exactly 2:15 a.m., a patient in Ward B pressed the emergency bell.

The nurse in charge looked at the monitor, frowned, and then turned to me.

"Go and check Bed 12."

She sounded calm, but she never looked up from her desk.

I walked down the long corridor. The lights flickered every few seconds because the hospital generator was running. Everything smelled of antiseptic, and the only sound was my shoes against the tiled floor.

Ward B was silent.

Too silent.

I looked at the beds.

One...

Two...

Three...

I counted until eleven.

There was no Bed 12.

I counted again.

Still eleven.

Thinking I had entered the wrong ward, I checked the sign above the door.

WARD B.

Just then, the emergency bell rang again.

This time it came from the empty space beyond Bed 11.

A small red light flashed where another bed should have been.

I stood frozen.

Slowly... very slowly... a hospital bed appeared before my eyes.

Not all at once.

It was as if something invisible was becoming visible.

First the wheels.

Then the mattress.

Then the white blanket.

Finally...

A patient.

An old man lay there with an oxygen mask over his face. His eyes were open, staring straight at me.

Relieved, I hurried over.

"Sir, are you okay?"

He raised one trembling hand and pointed behind me.

I turned immediately.

There was nothing there.

When I faced him again...

The bed was empty.

No patient.

No blanket.

Nothing.

Only the red emergency button on the wall continued to flash.

I ran back to the nurses' station.

"There is no Bed 12!" I shouted.

The room became quiet.

The nurse in charge slowly stood up.

"Who told you to answer the emergency bell?"

"You did."

She looked confused.

"I never sent anyone."

My heart sank.

The other nurses exchanged nervous glances.

One of them quietly locked the ward register inside a drawer.

Another switched off the monitor without saying a word.

Nobody spoke for almost a minute.

Finally, the oldest nurse whispered, "He has seen it."

The following morning I searched the hospital archives.

Buried inside a dusty cabinet was a newspaper from twenty-two years earlier.

The headline read:

"Twelve Patients Die After Oxygen Failure in Ward B."

The article explained that the hospital later removed Bed 12 and renumbered the ward to erase the memory of that night.

I stared at the faded photograph beneath the headline.

The man in the picture was the same old man I had spoken to.

I resigned before my training ended.

Years later, curiosity brought me back to the hospital.

Ward B had been renovated. Fresh paint covered the walls, and everything looked modern.

I smiled, convinced the story had only been a coincidence.

As I turned to leave, a young intern walked past me carrying a patient file.

I heard the nurse at the desk call after him.

"Excuse me... could you quickly check on Bed 12?"

The young man nodded and walked into the ward.

I wanted to stop him.

I opened my mouth...

But no words came out.

Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
