THE LADY BY THE WINDOW

Every morning on my way to school, I passed an old cream-colored house at the end of my street. On the second floor, a young lady always sat quietly by the window. She never waved or smiled. She simply looked outside with a calm expression, as if she was waiting for someone who never came.

At first, I paid little attention to her. But as the weeks passed, I found myself looking up every morning just to see if she was there. Somehow, seeing her became part of my daily routine.

One rainy afternoon, I forgot my umbrella and ran under the roof of a nearby shop. To my surprise, the lady from the window walked toward me holding a blue umbrella.

"You'll catch a cold if you keep standing here," she said with a gentle smile.

I thanked her and we shared the umbrella as we walked. Her name was Amara. She had recently moved into the neighborhood with her grandmother after losing her parents in a car accident. Sitting by the window had become her way of remembering happier days.

From that day, we became friends. We talked after school, shared stories, and sometimes bought roasted corn from an old woman at the junction. She loved reading novels, while I enjoyed writing short stories. She always encouraged me to keep writing, saying that words had the power to heal broken hearts.

As the months passed, our friendship grew into something deeper. Whenever I was worried about school or life, Amara somehow knew the right words to say. Her laughter made ordinary days feel special, and her presence brought peace I had never known.

One evening, as the sun painted the sky with shades of orange, we sat beneath a mango tree near her house. I finally gathered the courage to tell her how I felt.

"I don't just look for you at the window anymore," I confessed. "I look forward to every moment we spend together. I think I've fallen in love with you."

She smiled, her eyes shining with tears.

"I was hoping you'd say that," she whispered. "I fell in love with you the day you smiled at my window instead of looking away."

We both laughed, and for the first time, the silence between us felt beautiful.

Years later, people in the neighborhood still remembered the young lady by the window. But she no longer sat there waiting alone. Instead, she stood beside the man who had noticed her quiet loneliness and turned it into a lifetime of happiness.

Sometimes, love does not begin with grand gestures or dramatic moments. Sometimes, it begins with a simple glance through a window, a shared umbrella on a rainy day, and two lonely hearts finding comfort in each other. And that was how the lady by the window became the love story that changed my life forever.
