When Being Nice Becomes Self-Disrespect

I used to think being a good person meant always being available for people.

You help when they need you. You forgive when they hurt you. You keep quiet when they say something disrespectful because you don't want to cause problems. You give people second chances, sometimes third, fourth, and fifth chances.

And somehow, you start feeling like the bad person whenever you finally say “No.”

That's where things get interesting.

There is a difference between being kind and constantly tolerating things that hurt you.

Sometimes, we call it kindness when we're actually afraid of disappointing people. We say yes when we want to say no. We keep lending when we know we're being taken advantage of. We stay in friendships where we're constantly disrespected because we're scared of being called proud or difficult.

And because you've always been the "nice one," the moment you establish a boundary, people suddenly ask, “What happened to you?”

Nothing happened.

You simply realized that kindness shouldn't require you to abandon yourself.

Being a good person doesn't mean allowing everyone unlimited access to you. You can forgive someone and still keep your distance. You can love people and still have boundaries. You can help someone without becoming responsible for their entire life.

Sometimes, saying no is not wickedness. It's wisdom.

And honestly, the people who only appreciate your kindness when it benefits them may not actually miss you when you stop giving. They may simply miss what they were getting from you.

So be kind, but don't forget yourself while doing it.

A little reflection for you 💭

Before saying yes to something, ask yourself:

• Am I doing this because I genuinely want to, or because I'm afraid of disappointing them?
