DECEPTION (Part 2)

(Previous Night)

"How did you know it was my wife?" Mr. Samuel asked, visibly shocked and uneasy.

"I saw her. I clearly remember the day you both visited my place," Sandra replied with a shy smile. "I only pretended not to know her because of you. I didn't want her getting too close to me or giving me motherly advice."

They both laughed.

"If she saw you with me, then she's definitely aware you were in my car," Mr. Samuel said, resting his hands on the steering wheel as he thought for a moment.

"Sandra, my darling... I'm sorry to say this, but I can't take you out tonight as I promised. I'll have to drop you off now and rush home before she begins to suspect anything. Is that okay?"

Sandra turned her face away, pretending to be annoyed.

"C'mon..." Mr. Samuel chuckled. "I'll make it up to you."

"How?"

"Come here."

He gently pulled her closer and planted a kiss on her forehead.

"I'm going to make it up to you. You know what? I'll pick you up tomorrow instead. We'll go to Market Square, get you a few things, and then hang out. How does that sound?"

"Seriously?" Sandra's face lit up. "Thank you so much, sir. God bless you."

Mr. Samuel squinted playfully before wagging a finger at her.

"Haven't I told you to stop calling me 'sir'? I'm not your father... or your uncle." He laughed. "Think of me as your second daddy. We're close enough for you to call me something else."

Sandra immediately caught herself.

"Yes, s..." She stopped.

"...Yes."

"That's my girl."

(Present Day)

I came downstairs feeling feverish and weak.

I had already sent a mail to work informing them I wouldn't be coming in. I guessed the thoughts that had kept me awake all night had finally caught up with me.

"Kate, are the kids ready for school?"

"No, ma. Amira is still eating."

I turned towards Amira and immediately noticed the gloomy look on her face.

"Amira, what's the matter?" I asked, studying her expression.

She looked up at me and burst into tears.

"Mummy, I don't like Mrs. Adebisi," she cried, shaking her head angrily.

"Why, my baby? Tell me. Did she say something you didn't like?"

"Noooo! Mrs. Adebisi always forces me to finish my food even when I don't want to."

Laughter erupted across the room.

"Why is everybody laughing? Mummy, it's not funny oh."

I smiled.

"Don't worry, Pompom. I'll speak to Mrs. Adebisi and ask her not to force you anymore. But promise me you'll always try to finish your food by yourself."

I stretched out my little finger.

She immediately hooked hers around mine.

"Pinky promise, Mummy."

She wiped her tears and happily continued eating.

Not long after, the children left for school.

My husband was also getting ready to leave.

He asked why I wasn't going to work, and I explained that I'd taken the day off because I wasn't feeling well.

"Your health should always come first," he reminded me, as he always did.

He kissed my cheek softly before leaving.

I tried distracting myself by attending to my clients online. But no matter how much I worked, my mind kept wandering back to what I'd witnessed the previous evening.

I eventually took a shower and tried to get some sleep.

My husband returned around 5 p.m., his usual time.

I was in the kitchen preparing dinner when he walked in.

After dinner, he casually mentioned that he needed to step out to get a few things before meeting a business partner.

"I'll be back by nine," he said.

I nodded.

It was a few minutes past seven.

Then it hit me...

What if he wasn't meeting any business partner?

What if he was on his way to meet Sandra?

My heart began pounding.

I told Kate to keep an eye on the children because I needed to stop by the supermarket.

Without wasting another second, I grabbed my car keys and drove off.

I was still weak and pale but whatever this was, It had to end.

I stopped by Sandra's house and spoke with her mother.

She told me Sandra had gone for her usual evening studies and would probably be home by eight.

As much as I felt she was too young to be out that late, her mother's confidence suggested she saw nothing wrong with it. At least she would be 16 in a few months.

I gently asked if she'd come with me.

"I'm only trying to help," I said. "But I don't think Sandra has been going anywhere to study."

Her face changed immediately.

Without asking another question, she adjusted her wrapper and followed me.

The entire drive, I kept reassuring her that I might be wrong. I prayed I was.

We arrived at the same spot where I'd seen Sandra the previous evening.

To my surprise, nobody was there. We waited.

Five minutes. Ten minutes. Fifteen.

Nothing out of the ordinary.

Sandra's mother kept looking up and down the road, hope slowly giving way to disappointment.

Then...Headlights. I turned and my heart skipped at the sight of same black tinted SUV.

This was it.

I alerted Sandra's mother, and we both stepped closer to the roadside.

As the SUV drew nearer, I walked into view and signalled for it to stop.

The vehicle slowed down. The tinted window rolled down.

I hurried forward, my heart threatening to burst through my chest.

Please...Please let me be wrong. I muttered.

"Madam, is there a problem?" the driver asked, looking completely confused.

I froze. A woman sat in the passenger seat.

She smiled politely and waved at me.

The window rolled back up when I couldn't respond. The SUV drove away. I couldn't move or think.

Sandra's mother rushed over and held me before I lost my balance.

Then...

A bright flash of headlights caught my attention.

Another car.

A black Camry drove past.

My eyes instinctively followed it.

And there he was, sitting in the back seat with the little girl.

My husband and Sandra!!!

For the briefest second

My heart stopped.

No...

I couldn't be hallucinating.
