DECEPTION (Part 3)

‎I immediately got into my car and followed them from a safe distance.

‎

‎The entire drive, I kept muttering under my breath,

‎

‎"Please... let it not be what I think it is."

‎

‎They drove for a while before pulling up in front of a beautiful apartment building. It looked more like a lodge.

‎

‎My heart sank.

‎

‎"Obim..." I whispered angrily. "It will not be well with you if this is true o."

‎

‎My husband and Sandra got out while the driver drove off.

‎

‎Together, they walked into the compound.

‎

‎My suspicions only grew stronger.

‎

‎Sandra suddenly looked back, scanning the road behind them before quickly facing forward again.

‎

‎"Mr. Samuel... I think someone is following us," she said quietly.

‎

‎"I know," he replied calmly. "Just stick to the plan, my dear."

‎

‎He gently rested a hand on her shoulder as they continued walking.

‎

‎That was it.

‎

‎Everything inside me shattered.

‎

‎What exactly was I looking at?

‎

‎Cheating?

‎

‎With a fifteen-year-old?

‎

‎"No... no. This can't be happening."

‎

‎Sandra's mum stood beside me, equally confused, yet desperately hoping we were both wrong.

‎

‎The two of them stopped in front of one of the apartments.

‎

‎Loud music blasted from inside.

‎

‎They knocked.

‎

‎A few seconds later, the door opened.

‎

‎A well-dressed man stepped out.

‎

‎He looked respectable.

‎

‎The kind of man no one would ever suspect.

‎

‎The moment he saw Sandra, his face lit up.

‎

‎Then something strange happened.

‎

‎My husband quietly stepped away and moved to the side of the building as though making room for something.

‎

‎Before I could understand what was happening, my phone rang.

‎

‎It was my husband.

‎

‎I answered immediately.

‎

‎"Baby..."

‎

‎His voice was unusually serious.

‎

‎"I need you to go to the nearest police station and tell them to send officers to this address immediately. Tell them it's an attempted rape involving a minor."

‎

‎My jaw dropped.

‎

‎"So..."

‎

‎"It wasn't you?" I whispered, looking at Sandra's mother, whose eyes had grown just as wide as mine.

‎

‎"Babe, are you there? Please, it's urgent. I'll explain everything later."

‎

‎The call ended.

‎

‎Without wasting another second, I grabbed Sandra's mum by the hand and we ran.

‎

‎Trust me on this.

‎

‎I first stopped by the police station.

‎

‎A close friend of mine, a passionate feminist who worked there, immediately sprang into action after hearing what was happening.

‎

‎I called two of my colleagues, sent them the address, and also informed our family lawyer.

‎

‎By the time we got there, police officers had already surrounded the apartment.

‎

‎The man I had mistaken for a respectable gentleman was now in handcuffs, struggling like a common criminal.

‎

‎My husband stood nearby with Sandra wrapped safely in his arms as she cried uncontrollably.

‎

‎"What happened?" I asked, running towards them.

‎

‎The officers escorted the man everyone knew as Mr. Luxurious into the police vehicle.

‎

‎I kept throwing questions at my husband.

‎

‎He said nothing.

‎

‎Only after we got home did he finally explain everything.

‎Sandra had almost been raped.

‎

‎Things had been difficult at home, and one evening, while she was walking back from school, she met Mr. Luxurious.

‎He promised to change her life. He offered to pay her WAEC fees.

‎He made her believe he genuinely cared.

‎

‎He was the same man who had been picking her up those evenings while her mother believed she was attending lessons.

‎

‎A classic trap. He earned her trust first. Then he invited her over.

On one of those outings, I met Sandra by chance and offered to drop her off.

‎

‎Along the way, I spoke to her like I would speak to one of my own children.

‎

‎I wanted her to understand that not every act of kindness comes with hidden intentions.

‎

‎Before I even finished talking, she burst into tears and confessed everything." My husband narrated.

‎

‎"But... he didn't touch you, did he?" I asked, turning to Sandra.

‎

‎My heart pounded as I waited for her answer.

‎

‎She slowly shook her head.

‎

‎"He told me to come today..." she whispered.

‎

‎"He said... he wanted to make me a woman."

‎

‎Silence filled the room.

‎

‎"Ehn????" Sandra's mother screamed.

‎

‎"When did all this one start? Why didn't you tell me, Sandra?"

‎

‎She rushed towards her daughter in anger, but I quickly stepped in between them.

‎

‎"Mma, biko... take it easy."

‎

‎I gently held her hands.

‎

‎"She's still a child. She probably didn't even realize she was being manipulated. In her mind, she was only trying to help you with the burden of paying her WAEC fees. Please... this isn't the time."

‎

‎She broke down in tears.

‎

‎My husband continued.

‎

‎"After she told me everything, I knew we had to catch him properly."

‎

‎He sighed.

‎

‎"Children need a father figure. Sandra trusted me. But imagine if the next man she trusted had been another predator."

‎

‎He shook his head.

‎

‎"Some men honestly leave me speechless."

‎

‎He walked over to me.

‎

‎"I'm sorry I didn't tell you." He smiled sheepishly.

‎"I knew you had already started suspecting something."

‎

‎I folded my arms.

‎

‎"You know me too well." We both laughed.

‎"But you should have told me," I protested. "You know the kind of work I do. I would've helped you drag that useless man to prison myself."

‎

‎He scratched the back of his head.

‎

‎"Let's just say... I wanted to play detective for once."

‎

‎I shot him a side-eye.

‎

‎He immediately folded his hands in surrender.

‎

‎We both laughed again.

‎

‎Later, we saw Sandra and her mother off with a few gifts.

‎

‎We also promised to sponsor Sandra's WAEC registration.

‎

‎The smile on that girl's face...

‎

‎I'll never forget it.

‎

‎Mr. Luxurious was finally where he belonged. Behind bars of course.

‎Maybe I wasn't the hero of this story.

‎

‎But I'm grateful justice found its way to a child before it was too late.

‎

‎And yes...

‎

‎My readers are free to laugh at my overthinking and suspicion.

‎

‎But remember...

‎

‎"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

‎

‎Thank you...for not judging me.
