DON'T ASK ME WHAT I SAW

CHAPTER TWO Don't Ask Me What I Saw

Okay, young lady, snap out of it!!!

I mean, you just escaped death itself.

A lot of questions started flooding into my head.

Where was I? How did I get here? What happened after I passed out?

I tried to move, but a sharp pain reminded me that my body was still recovering. I looked around the room, trying to make sense of my surroundings. Everything looked unfamiliar.

Then I remembered the last thing I saw.

Those green eyes.

I quickly pushed the thought away.

The guy with the green eyes informed the doctor that I had woken up. The doctor came in shortly after and checked my vitals and the rest. After examining me, he confirmed that I was okay and just needed some rest.

A few minutes later, he left.

The room became quiet again.

The guy with the green eyes was still there, along with a girl who looked strangely familiar.

He introduced himself as Daniel and introduced the girl as his sister, Dani.

Oohhh… so they were siblings.

No wonder the resemblance.

Daniel looked at me and asked what had happened.

For a moment, I didn't know what to say.

They had helped me. I couldn't just sit there and refuse to tell them anything.

But I also couldn't tell them everything.

So I started by thanking them for helping me while I quickly cooked up a story to tell them.

They both said it was fine.

So I told them that I didn't really remember much, so I would just tell them what I could remember.

I started by telling them what happened.

I told them that I was staying with my rich aunt and that, one day, I found out she had been cheating on my uncle.

I accidentally saw something I wasn't supposed to see, and somehow, she found out that I knew.

I told them that I thought she was afraid I would tell my uncle, so she tried to get rid of me.

I managed to escape, but I didn't want to go back home. I didn't want anything to do with my aunt anymore.

“Please... don't call the police. I know what she did was wrong, but she's still my aunt. And she has children. I don't want my nieces and nephews to have to grow up without their mum, just like I did. I don't want them to go through what I went through.”

I tried to read their expressions as I told them my story, just to make sure it sounded convincing.

Dani looked at me suspiciously, while Daniel looked concerned.

That was good enough for me.

Then Dani spoke. Her voice was surprisingly soothing.

“What's your name?” she asked. “And do you remember anything about the assassins?”

I paused for a moment.

“I'm Elizabeth Campbell. And about the assassins, I barely remember much. They were all masked, and it was dark, so I couldn't really see their faces.”

Then I asked them if it was possible for them to find a place for me to stay. I didn't have any family members I could reach out to, and I didn't have a phone or any means of making transactions.

Dani and Daniel told me to give them a moment before stepping out of the room.

They came back a few minutes later.

Daniel was the one who spoke. He said that I could stay with them, but they had some conditions.

I quickly nodded and waited for him to continue.

He told me that I could only stay temporarily, and once I got a job or found a way to support myself, I would have to leave.

So I agreed.

So, a place to stay was settled. 😌

Once I had rested properly, I could start thinking about how to solve my problems.

They made plans for me to leave the next day since I was still a bit weak. I was scared to stay in the hospital because of everything that had happened, but I couldn't let anyone find out.

So, I just had to make sure I survived the night.

They got me some food to eat and my medication, then left almost immediately.

Somehow, I felt safe around them, though I couldn't explain why. But I was already feeling drowsy after taking my medication, so I surrendered to sleep once more.

A voice whispered,

“Elizabeth.”

It sounded faint at first, but then it started getting closer until it was right beside my ear.

Then I felt a coldness on my neck. It sent chills down my spine.

All of a sudden, a hand grabbed my legs and pulled me up.

Then I saw its face.

Fear gripped me instantly.
