GTCO AUTISM PROGRAMME: THE WAKE UP CALL I NEEDED
<p>I need to talk about the GTCO Autism Programme. </p><p>This year's conversation was what I wanted. </p><p>Hearing the wonderful Lola Dada-Olley share her story as a sibling was very inspiring, especially seeing how her partner has accepted and understood her brother with special needs, along with all the work she continues to do. </p><p>It reminded me clearly that no one fights harder for someone than a parent or sibling.</p><p>For real.</p><p>Another thing that stood out to me was that I needed to see my brother, who has autism, as a person and not just focus on the diagnosis. </p><p>Often, I treat him based on his diagnosis and forget to connect with him as a person. He has Autism, but he is still Tobi, who has interests just like I do.</p><p>The speaker, Abdulrasak Afeez Akanji, almost made me cry when he talked about how parents deal with denial, sadness, and worry about what lies ahead.</p><p>He reminded us that getting the right kind of help is important, not just any help, and to appreciate the child we have now. </p><p>And to the Corporate Dance world, wow! Just wow!</p><p>A massive well done to Guaranty Trust for once again gathering such a passionate crowd to better education around autism.</p><p>Thank you to all the speakers and panelists for sharing their story, and to every advocate making a difference.</p><p>And a very special shoutout to the siblings, the ones who step up, show up, and continuously advocate for their neurodiverse loved ones. If I had a garden, I'd send you flowers every day!</p><p>And if no one told you today, you’re doing an amazing job!</p>
