ILLUSION OF CHOICE

We've never had more choices, yet it somehow feels like we're choosing less.

Walk into a supermarket and you'll see ten different brands of bottled water. Open a streaming service and you'll scroll through thousands of movies. It feels like freedom. But is it?

Most of these choices lead to the same destination. Different logos, different colors, different marketing, yet often owned by the same company or driven by the same algorithms. We think we're making independent decisions, while our options have already been filtered, ranked, and recommended before we even started at all.

Most especially social media, it sells us this illusion. We believe we're choosing what to watch, but the algorithm quietly decides what deserves our attention. We think we're discovering music, news, and opinions, yet they're carefully selected based on what keeps us scrolling the longest.

The irony is that the more choices we have, the less satisfied we become. Shey I lie? (E never happen to you before?) We spend thirty minutes looking for something to watch, only to close the app. We switch between five apps hoping one will finally make us happy. More options haven't necessarily made life easier. They've just made choosing more exhausting.

The greatest illusion isn't that we have too many choices, it's believing every choice is truly ours.

So here's the question:

Are we really making decisions anymore, or are we simply picking from the options someone else has already chosen for us?

Catalyst ✍️
