DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH PEOPLE LIKE ME
<p>Do not fall in love with people like me. We will tell you we are fine because we have become experts at hiding the things that hurt us. </p><p><br/></p><p>You will notice it eventually, the way we go quiet in the middle of a conversation, the way we disappear when things become too real, the way we laugh at things that should probably make us cry. You will ask, “What’s wrong?” We will smile and say, “Nothing.” And because you love us, you will believe there must be a way to reach us.</p><p><br/></p><p>There isn't. Not because we don't want you there, but because we don't know how to let anyone stay. We will love you loudly one day and quietly the next. We will give you every part of ourselves, then become frightened when you start holding those parts too carefully. You will think you did something wrong. You didn't. We are just people who learned how to survive before we learned how to love.</p><p><br/></p><p>Survival has strange habits. It teaches you to leave before you are left. It teaches you to stop caring before you can be hurt. It teaches you to call distance peace and loneliness freedom. You will try to save us. Please don't. There are people who need love, and there are people who need to learn how to receive it. Sometimes, we are the second kind.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will love us until loving us begins to feel like losing yourself. One morning, you will look at yourself in the mirror and realize you have spent so much time trying to understand us that you have forgotten who you were before you met us. That is when you should leave, even if we ask you to stay. Especially if we ask you to stay.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because people like me can be beautiful to love. We can make you feel like the whole world has stopped just to give you a moment. But beauty does not always mean safety.
