That Friendship Breakup: Why does God take people out of your life?

Remember that friend who you thought would be your forever. You guys were probably going to be friends forever, live next to each other, and have your children be friends. And now, you observe at a distance what happens in this friend’s life.

But it usually starts with silence, fewer calls, shorter responses, and the gists that don’t excite you anymore. When you try to tell them, ‘What’s wrong?’ they are like, ‘Nothing.’

But you know deep in your heart that everything has changed, and now you’re the one going through a friendship breakup.

Don’t worry, been there, done that, but I understand it better.

In the spirit of growing up, I realised I should let things go. If you know me, you know how hyper-focused I am on fixing issues as if it were my assignment. Sometimes, things are outside of my control, and I need God to work on me for that. Plus, I needed to have sense.

Two weeks ago, I remember scrolling through old messages and saw a friend’s chat, and I asked myself,” What happened to us?”

For a while, I thought maybe I had done something wrong, maybe I hadn’t tried hard enough, or maybe I should have done this and that, but then I realised it wasn’t my fault.

God probably took that person from my life. As cringe-inducing or shocking as that sounds, it has happened to you before. I recently read a bible plan called ‘Why God removes People,’ and I understood that some people are part of your becoming, not your being.

They were there when you were at a particular season, figuring things out, when your mindset was different, but they are not there for the long run.

They have served their Purpose. Not everyone assigned to your past is designed for your future.

Read the bible plan here

God sees what we don’t. He knows the weight certain relationships carry and understands the distractions, the delays, even the ways some connections can keep us from evolving.

And when their role or task is complete, God doesn’t always announce their exit. Like ‘Toyin, say goodbye to John because he is going to leave your life.’

Sometimes… He just lets the distance speak for itself.

And you see, the thing is, God never removes without replacing; he always gives. If He takes someone out of your life, it’s because your next season requires something different.

And I know what you are thinking: what good did the ex-boyfriends/girlfriends do? Omo, me I don’t know oh. Apart from trauma and fictional story ideas, I don’t know, but the good news is that they left. Gloray, somebody? Gloray.

If you’re feeling like this, I want you to know that it may feel like loss and confusion, but it is preparation and alignment. Ask yourself, “What season did they serve?”

And please let God move. He knows what is best for us and loves us deeply.

Have an amazing weekend!
