THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR

There is something strange about human beings.

We hate corruption until we are the ones benefiting from it.

We hate injustice until it works in our favour.

We hate people who abuse power until we are given power of our own.

Then suddenly, everything has an explanation.

“He had no choice.”

“She was under pressure.”

“It was just a mistake.”

“We don't know what he was going through.”

Funny enough, we rarely give these explanations to the people we judge.

We see the action, but we don't see the pressure behind it.

We see the decision, but we don't see the position that produced it.

And perhaps that is because it is easier to judge someone from where we are standing than to imagine ourselves standing where they stood.

A manager punishes an employee too harshly, and we call him wicked.

A politician steals public money, and we call him corrupt.

A person uses their position for personal gain, and we question their character.

But sometimes I wonder...

If the same opportunity was placed in our hands, would we still be the people we claim to be?

Maybe you would.

Maybe you wouldn't.

This doesn't mean we should excuse wrongdoing.

You may still disagree with their decision.

You may still believe they were wrong.

But there is only one way to know for certain, and life rarely gives us a warning before it tests us.

So before you condemn the person standing on the other side of the mirror, ask yourself:

What If it was you, would you have done any better?

By EDDER
