When I'm fine becomes a habit.

There is a point where saying “I’m fine” stops being an answer and becomes a habit.

Someone asks, “How are you?”

You smile.

“I’m fine.”

And you move on.

Maybe you're not fine.

Maybe you're tired. Maybe something has been bothering you for weeks. Maybe you're carrying a disappointment you haven't told anyone about. Maybe you're simply overwhelmed by life and don't even know how to explain what you're feeling.

But you still say, “I'm fine.”

Because sometimes, explaining yourself feels harder than pretending.

You don't want the questions.

You don't want the pity.

You don't want to become a burden to anyone.

So you smile.

You laugh.

You show up.

You check on everyone else.

And somehow, everyone starts believing that you're okay.

That's the dangerous part about getting used to saying “I'm fine.”

People stop asking.

And eventually, you stop expecting anyone to notice.

But being strong doesn't mean you have to hide everything.

You are allowed to have bad days.

You're allowed to say, “I'm not okay today.”

You're allowed to need someone.

And if you've become the person who always says “I'm fine,” I hope you know that you don't have to carry everything alone.

And if you know someone like that, maybe check on them twice.

Not because you assume they're hiding something, but because sometimes, people need to know that someone genuinely cares enough to ask again.

Because behind some of the biggest smiles are stories nobody has heard.

So, the next time someone asks, “How are you?”

Maybe don't be afraid to tell the truth.

And if the truth is simply, “I'm not okay,”

that's okay too.
