Wishes Aren't Horses

If longing could redraw the map, my footsteps would have left this place long before my heart ever did.

I often wonder who I would have become had I awakened beneath a kinder sky, where dreams weren't forced to compete with survival, and ambition wasn't measured by endurance.

Here, potential is abundant, yet opportunity arrives like rain in the dry season—promised often, but seldom seen. I've watched gifted people fold their dreams into suitcases, not because they stopped loving home, but because hope found another address. And who can blame them? When the soil no longer rewards the seed, even the deepest roots begin to imagine another land.

Still, this country refuses to surrender.

Children laugh in streets burdened by brokenness. Parents stretch little into enough. Dreamers continue planting tomorrow in uncertain ground, believing that somewhere beyond disappointment, one opportunity still waits.

Perhaps that is our greatest strength.

But resilience should never become an excuse for a broken system. There is nothing noble about suffering simply because we've learned to survive it. Endurance is admirable, yet it does not make injustice acceptable.

If wishes were horses, many of us would have crossed every border long ago. But wishes cannot stamp passports, erase boundaries, or rewrite history.

So I keep one wish close to my heart

not merely to leave this place,

but to witness the day when no one feels compelled to flee from it, because home has finally become a place where dreams are allowed to live.
