THE JOURNEY OF MY LIFE

CHAPTER SEVEN

THE PEOPLE WHO SHAPED MY JOURNEY

No one truly walks through life alone.

Even when we think we are carrying our burdens by ourselves, there are always people whose words, actions, kindness, or even mistakes leave a mark on our journey.

Looking back at my life, I realize that many people helped shape the person I became.

Some came into my life when I needed them most. Others came for only a short time, but they left lessons that remained with me long after they were gone.

The first person who shaped my life was my mother.

Although she was taken from me when I was still very young, her influence never left me. She taught me the meaning of sacrifice. She showed me what it meant to care for your children even when you had very little.

She taught me faith.

She taught me kindness.

She taught me perseverance.

Most importantly, she taught me that love is not only something we say. Love is something we show through our actions.

Even after her death, I continued to carry her lessons with me.

My father also became part of the foundation of my story, even though I lost him when I was only three years old. I do not have many memories of him, but his absence became one of the earliest realities I had to learn to live with.

Then there were my siblings.

We shared the same home and the same mother. We experienced happiness and hardship together, but life eventually took us in different directions.

There were times when I missed the days when we were all together.

Life scattered us, but the bond of being brothers and sisters remained a part of my story.

When I came to Lagos, I met new people who became part of my journey. Some welcomed me. Some encouraged me. Some challenged me. Some taught me lessons without even knowing they were teaching me.

I learned not to judge people only by how long they stayed in my life.

Sometimes, someone can spend years with you and leave little impact, while another person can enter your life briefly and change the way you see the world.

I also learned that people are not perfect.

There were people who disappointed me.

There were people who made promises they could not keep.

There were people I trusted who eventually taught me to be more careful.

At first, I saw those experiences only as painful. Later, I understood that they were also lessons.

They taught me the importance of boundaries.

They taught me to think for myself.

They taught me not to place my entire happiness in the hands of another person.

And they taught me that forgiveness does not always mean forgetting. Sometimes forgiveness simply means choosing not to allow the actions of another person to control the rest of your life.

There were also people who showed me genuine kindness.

People who encouraged me when I was discouraged.

People who believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself.

People who reminded me that my circumstances did not define my worth.

I may not be able to mention every person who played a role in my story, but I carry something from each of them.

Some gave me memories.

Some gave me wisdom.

Some gave me courage.

Some gave me lessons.

And some gave me reasons to keep believing in people.

As I look back, I realize that my journey was shaped not only by the things that happened to me but also by the people I encountered along the way.

Every relationship became a chapter.

Every friendship became a lesson.

Every goodbye became part of my growth.

And every act of kindness reminded me that even in difficult seasons, there is still goodness in the world.

Today, I appreciate the people who have been part of my journey—not because every experience was perfect, but because every experience helped shape me.

My story is made up of many people.

But I have also learned that, eventually, we must take responsibility for the direction of our own lives.

People can guide us.

People can support us.

People can encourage us.

But we must choose to keep walking.

And I chose to keep walking.

I carried the lessons of the people who came before me, the love of those who supported me, and the memories of those I had lost.

Then I continued toward the future.

Because the people who shaped my journey were important.

But the person I was becoming was even more important.

Their presence became part of my story, but my choices would determine how the story continued.
