The man they called Dr. Williams! Vol. III - El Deselance
<blockquote>There are people you know.<br/>And there are people you think you know.<br/>The difference between both can ruin your life.</blockquote><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel didn’t sleep that night.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had spent years looking at cases that refused to make sense, but this one was different.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maybe it was the number of missing people.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maybe it was the fact that every file seemed to lead him back to the same neighbourhood.</p><p><br/></p><p>Or maybe…</p><p><br/></p><p>It was Dr. Williams.</p><p><br/></p><p>There was something about the man.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel couldn’t explain it.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had spoken to him twice.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nothing strange.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nothing suspicious.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just a man who smiled too much and answered questions a little too calmly.</p><p><br/></p><p>Still, suspicion wasn’t evidence.</p><p><br/></p><p>And Daniel knew better than to accuse a man because of a feeling.</p><p><br/></p><p>So he started with the easiest thing.</p><p><br/></p><p>He searched his name.</p><p><br/></p><p>Mr. Akpabio Williams.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>No criminal record.</p><p><br/></p><p>No complaints.</p><p><br/></p><p>No lawsuits.</p><p><br/></p><p>No previous investigation.</p><p><br/></p><p>A clean man.</p><p><br/></p><p>Too clean.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel leaned closer to the computer.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then he saw it.</p><p><br/></p><p>A photograph.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dr. Williams standing beside a group of young people.</p><p><br/></p><p>A banner behind them read:</p><p><br/></p><p>WILLIAMS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel clicked.</p><p><br/></p><p>Scholarships.</p><p><br/></p><p>Vocational training.</p><p><br/></p><p>Educational sponsorships.</p><p><br/></p><p>Youth empowerment.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was almost impressive.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then he noticed something.</p><p><br/></p><p>One of the names on the scholarship list looked familiar.</p><p><br/></p><p>Chidera Nwankwo.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel stopped breathing for a second.</p><p><br/></p><p>He checked the date.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was posted three weeks after Chidera disappeared.</p><p><br/></p><p>He stared at the screen.</p><p><br/></p><p>“How?”</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>The next morning, Daniel went back to the neighbourhood.</p><p><br/></p><p>He didn’t tell anyone why.</p><p><br/></p><p>He simply walked.</p><p><br/></p><p>He greeted people.</p><p><br/></p><p>Asked questions.</p><p><br/></p><p>Listened.</p><p><br/></p><p>Everyone loved Dr. Williams.</p><p><br/></p><p>The woman selling provisions called him “a good man.”</p><p><br/></p><p>The mechanic said Williams once paid for his mother’s surgery.</p><p><br/></p><p>A teacher said he had sponsored three children.</p><p><br/></p><p>Even Chidera’s mother defended him.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Doctor was one of the people who helped us search for my daughter.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel looked at her.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You trust him?”</p><p><br/></p><p>She smiled sadly.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Of course.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel said nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>Sometimes the truth is cruelest when the person standing beside you is the person you are looking for.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>That evening, Daniel returned to the station.</p><p><br/></p><p>He opened Chidera’s file again.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then Felicia’s.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then every other file he had collected.</p><p><br/></p><p>Scholarships.</p><p><br/></p><p>Vocational programmes.</p><p><br/></p><p>Charity.</p><p><br/></p><p>Educational trips.</p><p><br/></p><p>There was a connection.</p><p><br/></p><p>But it wasn’t what he expected.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dr. Williams wasn’t simply meeting these people.</p><p><br/></p><p>He was appearing in their lives before they disappeared.</p><p><br/></p><p>Sometimes months before.</p><p><br/></p><p>Sometimes years.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had helped them.</p><p><br/></p><p>Paid for things.</p><p><br/></p><p>Recommended opportunities.</p><p><br/></p><p>Built trust.</p><p><br/></p><p>And when they vanished…</p><p><br/></p><p>Nobody questioned him.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because why would they?</p><p><br/></p><p>He was the man who had helped them.</p><p><br/></p><p>The man who had comforted their families.</p><p><br/></p><p>The man who had stood beside their mothers when they cried.</p><p><br/></p><p>The man everyone called Doctor.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel finally understood.</p><p><br/></p><p>The disappearances weren’t the beginning.</p><p><br/></p><p>They were the result of years of preparation.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>He picked up his phone.</p><p><br/></p><p>There was one person he needed to speak to.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dr. Williams.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>Williams was sitting outside his house when Daniel arrived.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Detective.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Doctor.”</p><p><br/></p><p>They smiled at each other.</p><p><br/></p><p>For a few seconds, neither spoke.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then Daniel sat down.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I’ve been looking through some old cases.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Williams nodded.</p><p><br/></p><p>“That’s your job.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Do you remember Chidera?”</p><p><br/></p><p>The smile disappeared.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Of course.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Did you ever help her?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Williams looked at him.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Help her with what?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“School.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Silence.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then Williams smiled again.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I’ve helped many children.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“I know.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel placed a photograph on the table.</p><p><br/></p><p>Williams looked at it.</p><p><br/></p><p>For the first time…</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel saw something in his eyes.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not fear.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not guilt.</p><p><br/></p><p>Something else.</p><p><br/></p><p>Recognition.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel stood.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I’ll see you again, Doctor.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Williams nodded.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I know you will.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel walked away.</p><p><br/></p><p>He didn’t notice the smile that returned to Williams’ face.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>That night, Daniel received an email.</p><p><br/></p><p>No sender.</p><p><br/></p><p>No subject.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just one sentence.</p><p><br/></p><p>You are looking in the wrong place.</p><p><br/></p><p>He stared at it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another message arrived.</p><p><br/></p><p>This time, there was an attachment.</p><p><br/></p><p>A photograph.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel opened it.</p><p><br/></p><p>His face changed.</p><p><br/></p><p>It wasn’t Chidera.</p><p><br/></p><p>It wasn’t Felicia.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was someone else.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone he knew.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone who had been missing for years.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone whose case Daniel had personally investigated.</p><p><br/></p><p>His sister.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>He dropped the phone.</p><p><br/></p><p>For years, Daniel had believed his sister’s disappearance was an unrelated tragedy.</p><p><br/></p><p>Now…</p><p><br/></p><p>he wasn’t so sure.</p><p><br/></p><p>His entire investigation had suddenly become personal.</p><p><br/></p><p>And somewhere across Lagos, Dr. Williams was preparing for tomorrow.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>Three days later</p><p><br/></p><p>The police arrived at Dr. Williams’ house.</p><p><br/></p><p>The gate was open.</p><p><br/></p><p>The house was empty.</p><p><br/></p><p>No struggle.</p><p><br/></p><p>No blood.</p><p><br/></p><p>No evidence.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just an envelope sitting neatly on the dining table.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel opened it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Inside was a single piece of paper.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dear Detective,</p><p><br/></p><p>You spent so much time trying to find the monster that you forgot to ask yourself why everyone trusted him.</p><p><br/></p><p>Perhaps that was the point.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some people are not meant to be found.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some stories are not meant to have endings.</p><p><br/></p><p>And some people…</p><p><br/></p><p>were never where you thought they were.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel turned the paper over.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dr. Williams was gone.</p><p><br/></p><p>Again.</p><p><br/></p><p>⸻</p><p><br/></p><p>Years later, people would still talk about him.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some would say he was a monster.</p><p><br/></p><p>Others would insist he was a good man who was wrongly accused.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some would say he died.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some would say he left the country.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some would even claim they had seen him somewhere.</p><p><br/></p><p>But nobody ever knew the truth.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not even Daniel.</p><p><br/></p><p>And maybe that’s the most frightening part.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because sometimes…</p><p><br/></p><p>the scariest stories aren’t the ones where the monster is caught.</p><p><br/></p><p>They’re the ones where you spend the rest of your life wondering…</p><p><br/></p><p>if he ever really left.</p>
At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
