The Art of Leaving(A poem)

Sometimes,

healing wears the face of loneliness.

No applause.

No audience.

Just the sound of my own footsteps,

learning the language of freedom.

It doesn’t always feel better.

Some mornings,

peace feels unfamiliar.

Some nights,

silence is louder

than every voice I’ve ever tried to escape.

So I stay sober—

not only from bottles,

but from everything

that clouds my judgment:

validation,

false promises,

and people

who only remembered my name

when it served them.

I walk alone now.

Funny how the same mouths

that told me to leave

are the first to ask where I’ve gone.

“Where are you?”

“You good?”

Their messages arrive,

but they no longer find

the version of me

that waited to be chosen.

I’ve stopped knocking

on doors

that were never meant to open.

I’ve stopped folding myself

into shapes

that made other people comfortable

while I disappeared.

Loss has been

a ruthless teacher,

but an honest one.

It taught me

that not everyone

who walks beside you

is walking with you.

Some people

only travel

until the road becomes difficult.

The rest

become memories.

Every scar

has a story.

Every goodbye

left behind

a lesson I couldn’t learn

any other way.

I no longer measure my life

by who stayed.

I measure it

by the strength

I found

after they left.

There is an art to leaving.

Not every departure

is an escape.

Some are a return—

to yourself,

to your peace,

to the person

you were becoming

before the world

convinced you

that you had to be someone else.

So if this path

demands solitude,

I’ll answer with courage.

If rebuilding means

starting with empty hands,

I’ll build anyway.

Because leaving

isn’t always giving up.

Sometimes,

it’s the bravest way

to begin again.

Sabali
