Listen to this Insight

I saw a Hollywood flick about a week or two ago, starring Anne Hathaway alongside some hunky, hazel eyed, gorgeous British actor. The boy fine no be small, chai!

The plot revolves around an older woman falling in love with a member of a boy band who she’s old enough to birth. The movie is also based on a book (which I’m currently reading), and has a lovely, corny plot perfect for diehard romantics like me.

The producers released an entire album on popular music streaming platforms, off the songs sang by the fictional band in the movie. I have fallen in love with almost all the songs and there’s nothing anyone can say to convince me that “August Moon” is not a real boy band.

Before I came to pen this, I was listening to my favorite song on the album titled “Dance before we walk”, and I smiled at how addicted to discovering music gems in movies and tv shows I am. No jokes, I have a repertoire of songs gotten off movies and tv shows on my playlist, songs discovered over the years from some of my favorite films and tv series. I even have the perfect song for my wedding day: a beautiful tune I heard on the first episode of a Nollywood YouTube series titled “This Is It.”

I won’t share the title so you won’t steal it for your own wedding. *Tongue out*

There was also this Hollywood series I think was discontinued titled “Stalker.” In it, i unearthed a gem of a song “One way or another” which was sang by a two-man British band called “Until The Ribbon Breaks.” Even the name sef you go know say their songs go sweet! The group reworked the original piece and their version was so thrilling, years after I chanced upon this gem, I still listen to it till this very day.

I love how transcendental music is, for me.

It literally transports me to different places and times. And it speaks a universal language, so much so someone like me in my wee, nondescript corner of Lagos, can understand the feelings and message conveyed in a song belted in French.

Plus I personally think some of the best melodies are soundtracks. Particularly the ones specifically composed for that movie or tv show.

Anyone else like to discover songs in films like I do? It’s just such a dope thing, isn’t it? Finding a really nice song in a movie, especially one not very many people have heard of, and feeling like an A&R. Then I proceed to play the song over and over; until everybody around me and their dogs know the lyrics.
