Be Your Biggest Cheerleader
Listen to this Insight

A few days ago, a young scholar from Pan Atlantic University, graced me with an interview.

A friend of mine passed on my number and after some back and forth, we settled on a final date for a virtual meeting; where she asked me questions revolving my career path, the challenges I had experienced thus far, and so on. She was comparing me with the likes of Kemi Adetiba, meanwhile I only have one short film (in post production sef) under my filmmaking belt. 😂😫

She was not an Arise News correspondent, nor was the interview ending up on CNN. It was just an undergrad from one of our universities, but it was officially the first time anybody had sought me out to inquire on my journey as a filmmaker.

And I will always remember this with pride.

Because one thing I perpetually do - is celebrate my wins - both big and small. I embrace my journey with wholeheartedness. Despite the curve balls, the occasional bout of self doubt, the veering off the road when imposter syndrome and confusion hit, I always hop back on. I am my own plenipotentiary, so I motivate myself and speak well of my talents both in public and in private.

If i don’t do it, who will?

Which brings me to the heart of my message.

I’ve discovered most of the really intelligent, talented people I know, are the folks who doubt themselves the most. They’re the ones who don’t think they’re doing the right things enough, and judge themselves ever so harshly. If you’re guilty of this, please stop it, I beg of you.

Not only are you doing yourself a huge disservice, you are doing it to the world as well.

Whenever you let doubt creep in and stop you from utilizing your skills, you give less talented people room to take up your space. And we all know they’re the ones who take up the most space and make the loudest noise. 😏😒

If you achieve even the smallest feat, give yourself a pat on the back like I’ve learned to do. Keep going, pushing forward and if you stumble, like the late Aliyah said: dust yourself off and try again!

Always be your biggest cheerleader, because if you’re not, why should anybody else support or believe in you?

Think about it.
