CONCEDING SUPREMACY - THE OWN GOAL PHENOMENON
Listen to this Insight
An African man would never agree to the notion that the whites are superior to us. The strange thing however, is that their actions suggest otherwise. It seems that they rather agree through actions rather than words. I'd narrow it down home to Nigeria. A typical next gen Nigerian places value on western cultures over ours. This can be noticed through things like: the intention to speak like them (by this I mean accents), adopting western slangs and discarding ours in order to come across as sophisticated, elevating their ideologies above African ideologies, amongst others. Quite a number of times, we've seen people being mocked online, for having an igbo or yoruba accent. Such individuals are deemed 'local' and 'razz'. Our modern idea of sophistication, requires acting like an American or British, rather than like a Nigerian. And once you put the culture of a foreigner over yours, you've basically admitted that his is superior. Speaking of culture, a lot of us believe that the word solely applies to Africans. So many people ignorantly associate culture to backwardness. Some even peg it as one of the problems with the country. To them, the westerners do not bother about such trivial thing as culture, hence it's one of the reasons why their climes are saner. To these people, I advise reading up on world cultures. So many things we have imbibed into our lives, we do not even know what it means. Another absurd thing is the automatic believe that the western way of doing things are 'saner'. Do we even know the implications of such a thing? That is basically belittling yourself in a bid to put another over. One of the worst things that can happen to a man is the absence of self respect. The whites know this, and they constantly use it against us. Do you expect to be treated as an equal by a person, you concede superiority to? They know that a lot of Africans model their lives after them. And as such develop by default, a superiority complex. So it should come as no surprise to see a white man, who believes he is superior to an African. Our actions and desire to be like him, gives him the impetus to make such claim.
