Don't look at me like that

---

Don’t Look at Me Like That

Chapter 1: The Look

There’s a look people give when they think they know you. The kind of look that weighs heavier than words, silent but loud—like a question without an answer, or worse, an accusation without a crime. “Don’t look at me like that,” I wanted to say to her, the moment I caught her eyes flicker with that same look. But I didn’t. Instead, I turned away and buried my face in my hands.

I never wanted to be seen that way. Not by anyone. Not even by my closest friend, Emma.

It wasn’t that I was ashamed of what I’d done. Or maybe I was. But it wasn’t that simple. Sometimes, the hardest thing isn’t hiding your mistakes—it’s facing the way people change their eyes when they realize who you really are beneath the surface.

I met Emma in college, the kind of friend who believed in peeling back layers until all the mess underneath was out in the open. She said it was about trust. I thought it was about judgment.

That night, sitting across from her in the dim light of the café, I felt the weight of that look crush me. “Don’t look at me like that,” I said, voice barely above a whisper. She didn’t reply.

Because some truths don’t need words. Sometimes, a look says everything.

---
