Echoes beneath

*📖 Episode 29 —

"Echoes Beneath"*

The basement walls seemed to breathe. A thick, choking silence wrapped around them. Denniem quickly kicked the radio, but it was already dead again. Aisha clutched the file to her chest, heart racing.

“Everyone calm down!” Success barked, his eyes darting around. “This is just a prank. Or maybe an old speaker connected to someone’s Bluetooth—”

A door creaked.

They all turned.

No one had touched it.

Amaka backed into Kunle. “Who… who dey there?”

A shadow moved at the far end of the room. It didn’t walk—it glided. Silent. Tall. Hooded.

“Zara?” Aisha croaked, stepping forward.

Denniem pulled her back. “No be Zara. That thing isn’t human.”

The figure raised its arm and pointed directly at… *Success*.

The ground rumbled. Dust fell from the ceiling. Suddenly, the room shook as a hidden trapdoor behind the shelf slid open with a metallic screech.

“I’m not going in there!” Amaka cried.

Success stepped forward. “Then I will. I need to know the truth.”

“Alone?” Kunle asked.

“No,” Denniem said, swallowing hard. “We go together. If we split, we’re finished.”

They descended the stairs, phones lighting the narrow path. The air was damp, metallic. Strange symbols lined the walls—some glowing faintly.

Aisha touched one and a faint voice echoed:

*“You were chosen. You don’t belong here. Leave or serve.”*

“Chosen for what?” she whispered.

Suddenly, footsteps behind them. They turned.

Zara stood there, pale, eyes blank… her lips moving with no sound.

“She’s been turned,” Denniem muttered.

Then Zara spoke—voice layered with another, deeper tone:

*“One of you won’t leave alive.”
