Embracing imperfections
Listen to this Insight
Humans aren't perfect, neither are we invincible. We often wish we were though. Often thinking that life would be a lot better if we were invincible. Because when you think about it, vulnerability deprives us from living life to its fullest, right? Wrong. A perfect life of invulnerability, would be a boring life. If we never get to experience low points in our course of living, we would not appreciate the high points. Wealth exists because there is poverty, victories exist because there is loss, love exists because there is hate and resentment, and life exists because there is death. We love the warmth which comes with joy, because we know the coldness that accompanies sadness. Take away these negative feelings, and there is nothing to look forward to. In screenwriting, and basically any form of fictional writing, we are discouraged from making characters perfect. Because there is nothing to root for in a perfect character. His struggles, losses and occasional lapses or weakness make him exciting. The audience is invested in such character. And art being a reflection of reality, means this is applicable to the real world. There is this sense of fulfillment that comes when a person overcomes their flaws and obstacles, in order to attain a goal. It is usually accompanied by a sense of pride. Because when you think about it, we may take our successes for granted if they're easily handed to us. Life in general is a proof of the beauty of imperfection. If we lived forever, then life would be tiresome and bland. There are fictional stories of characters who slip into unhappiness due to immortality. These stories exists, because the writers have imagined a life of immortality. Death stings, but it gives meaning to life. In summary, invulnerability is not a bad thing. We just have to look at it from a different perspective.
